Is the 7 doubled on this 1947 Maple Leaf 50 cents, and if so is that a known variety? Guess I need to get 2014 Charleton...

As per Nicklesguy all 1947 ML S7 are repunched. It is one of 1947 S7 dies which has been reworked with with a Maple Leaf added.... If you can find an early die state in real good condition (I think yours is) you can see that is a 7/7/7.

There is a good write up on the 1947, 1947ML and 1948 dies in the 2014 Charlton 68th Variety section.

In the very notch of the 7 I can imagine that I see a hint of a 3rd 7 in the 2nd and 3rd photos, and I can imagine that I see the hint of a third tail, but I've not had any of these in person except this one. Waiting for my 2014 Charlton to arrive... 400 varieties of 50 cent George VI. Yes, a nice coin, my best ebay score ever.

There are not 400 George VI Major varieties illustrated in Charlton's 68th.... it contains a broad brush of the Major Variety types for each year but certainly not all that can be found (for instance there are at least 8 different 1943 dies exhibiting doubling east of the top loop of the 3 which are not all included).

Kbbpll is correct: the third instance of the 7/7/7 is visible in the crook of the 7.

BTW kppbll.. this is one nice looking coin... the detail is excellent.

I posted the coin in the grading forum a while back, might as well show what the rest looks like here, yes I think it's a good strike.

I enjoy what Calgary Coins has to say about George VI varieties here http://www.calgarycoin.com/modern/cd50cent.htm
