So I upped my camera budget and I found a Sony a3000 on Amazon for 339. The reviews look outstanding and iwould like to know what you think andif the Nikon lenses will work with this.

newhobby...there are two reasons I and SD and others on this forum recommend Canon cameras...

1) Cameras from the XS and newer have a special shutter function called EFSC that virtually eliminates camera-induced vibration of all types. This makes images, especially higher magnification (like for varieties), much clearer.

2) The Zoombrowser software that comes with the camera makes tethering to a computer very easy, and it's free.

The Sony and Nikon cameras are nice, but the Sony has little or no support for tethering, and you will need to buy the tethering software for Nikon.

I still fall back to the Canon XS as the go-to camera for coins. It has all the above and is also well-supported by many folks on this forum, so any questions you have can be quickly addressed. Plus, you can get body-only for <$200 (typically $160-$175) so you will be saving $$ versus the others on your list...

Awesome thank you. The only reason I looked at the others was for the MP value

T3i's a good choice - an excellent all-around camera with everything we like, the current-generation sensor and is a couple generations old so available at a good price.

You guys are awesome. Thank you so much for answering my multitude of seemingly silly questions. I have found a few kits on Amazon for 6-800 and I'm willing to shell it out now that I finally have the opportunity to get a good camera.

Don't forget ebay. I've bought more than one fairly expensive camera from high-volume Asian dealers.

Not sure it's still running, but Amazon had a 2% back deal on Canon in Oct/Nov/Dec. If nothing else that paid for the memory card...

A T3i kit with 18-55 will do very well for walking around. It's also been shown here recently that the 18-55's do very well with Dollar size coins, and it can be your go-to lens for full slab shots and other stuff around the coin desk.
