With the popularity of social media like Facebook and Twitter, where people usually carry on conversations, I suspect some of the same socializing goes on at CCF?

But forum pages aren't the best venue for conversation. Perhaps there's a place for diverting some of this socializing off the forum pages--and into a CCF chat room? I wouldn't mind discussing some of my collecting interests in more detail w/o clogging the forums. I would expect that all the standards of language/conduct would still apply.

Aren't there some ready-made chat modules that could be easily plugged into CCF's format? Just throwing out that idea.

Too much good information is lost, plus every forum I've seen add one... within a month there's just the crickets.

Great idea. Can't believe no-one thought of it before (Or maybe it wasn't a viable idea back then). I'm 100% with you on the idea.

I keep saying I'm not into astrology but my Libra scales show me both sides of this one.

I have wasted most of the last 5 years playing on Lord of the Rings Online. If you have not played a game like that you will not be familiar with the term "Barrens Chat" when the only things being said are garbage. So the probability of garbage is fairly high.

On the other hand I have seen many times where I would like to respond with a quick question or a snappy 'Thanks' but don't want to clog up the forum.

I have sensed some frustration by the veterans here at people starting new threads to discuss topics that have dozens of threads already going. The problem with the old threads is they can be a quagmire and impossible to find that one piece of information in, with a chat option you could just ask 'where do I find that tid-bit' or 'should I start a new thread because this has not been addressed in much detail'.

Not wanting to over tax the moderators but would there be an option to have quick questions answered on a one on one basis? There is the 'Send Note to Staff' option but that is simply handled by the staff, there is no direct feed back unless an e-mail is sent.

Yes--I understand your point. It's one reason I try to be concise/informative when I post on CCF...in the event anyone reads the thread at a later date.

So I'm not quite sure what I'm suggesting for chat rooms, that can't be covered on topic threads--and later archived. It makes little sense to install a chat room if it won't get used. What's the real difference between the two?

If you want to socialize outside of CCF, friend each other on Faceboook or circle them in Google+. Both have a very robust group enabled chat/IM system. If you are concerned with privacy, then best avoid chat systems altogether, loose lips and all.

Of course, there is always IRC.

Thanks for all your observations...it's helped me piece together what I'm driving at. Actually, I started thinking about this from observing posting behavior of some brand-new CCF members, who sometimes sprinkle short, somewhat meaningless comments across forum threads. Sometimes this may be an attempt to pad one's post count to B/S/T on CCF. However, other times it may simply be due to their posting behavior from other sites on the 'net. After all, not all sites really care (or count) your post number.

--Just observing here, trying to understand online behavior. This is not a value-judgment of CCF members or CCF policies. The system here seems to work pretty darn well--people generally play well together here.

Sometimes I have nothing to add, but would click "like" for the photos or content--if I had that option rather than say "nice post!". This may be trivial, but other forums do it, and sometimes I enjoy getting "likes"--it helps me know when my content is interesting.

Yes, that's always an option, but I see little cross-over traffic. How many people regularly visit the CCF page on Facebook? Honestly, I'm getting a little tired of FB. Very little of substance happens there--it seems mostly about internet memes and "look at me" posts rather than getting people to actually think/interact.

Like I said, there is always IRC.

Chat is never going to happen here. Never.

Moderating the posts is enough work. Adding a chat function would mean having at least one moderator in chat at all times making sure someone does not say the wrong thing to a YN. We have a high family friendly standard to maintain.

JBuck, I appreciate your take on this subject. Maybe I wasn't that clear...I care less about "chat" than I do of increasing quality of posts--which may ultimately affect participation and CCF's 'net presence. Far be it for me to suggest that moderators increase their workload to monitor chat rooms.

Sometimes, I'm probably guilty of clogging posts with blather, simply because there are no other options to "like" content. Generally speaking, I come here to read and post quality material. And the 'net isn't cut into stone. There's always a better way to do something--it's a fluid, time-critical medium.

Speaking of which, did anyone see that Superbowl ad yesterday: "The 80's called--they want their store back". I hope CCF knows I like the forums (heck, look at my post count!)--but honestly CCF is starting to lag behind, when there are more socially-interactive features built into forums now.

I've probably belabored way past my point--please don't shoot the messenger.
