Hello I have this Sweden 10 ore from 1902 that is supposed to be silver. However it looks suspiciously like copper. Could it be a pattern? I have no good scale to use and it is the correct size. Could you help me with this puzzle. Thanks!
Since these coins are only .400 silver (ie .600 copper), they are subject to discoloration from copper toning. Especially if the coin got buried or was subjected to the environment. I see a couple corrosion spots that might indicate that.
Understand that the more oxidized a metal is to the environment - in this case copper being more susceptible to corrosion than silver - the more oxidized metal will make its way to the surface with time and become oxidized - so a 40% Ag alloy - we see this effect. Its a bit more complex than this as this does not happen as severely with typical 90%Ag/5%Cu alloys ... here we see silver enrichment with this alloy. BTW ... shipwreck pieces with time slowly become 99% Ag pure ... yep!
