In the future you should email the seller and ask to clarify exactly what coins you will be bidding on. just be real polite and as long as they are not trying to scam you they will gladly provide you with the dates and mm's and if they are trying to scam you you will just either never hear back from them or try to avoid answering the questions with excuses(and if they lie about it you just contact ebay and get a refund). in those cases it's always better to err on caution especially with larger amounts of money and possible key dates being in the lot.
I'm really really happy that the seller agreed to cancel the transaction, that was very honest of them.Plus, even if the coin was a "1916 d" Mercury dime their are more fakes(altered dates/mintmark or straight up fakes) than real ones out there.
