How many of you do this? What is a good route to go w/ them. I am assuming you purchase the bag of choice and search through it for errors etc, then cash in what you don't keep...?
Having read through that "beginners" site. I am trying to find what facit of coin collecting I want to go in. Without unloading too much $$$ to start out with.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I used to do this and did quite well on the first two years I started 2001/2002. The last couple of years though I have ended up with bags of coins that are worth less than I paid for them. So I have stopped.

Hmm...that isn't reasurring. Well, first things first. Get my current collection sorted and go back and pick up what other coins my dad has come across. Then go from there. Plenty of time...

I buy bags once in a while but NEVER open them. Sit on them for a while and put them back up for sale. Have a bag of buffalos (2005-D) here now and a bag of Peace Medal (2004-D) as well but not really sure why? Sooner or later they will be gone and there will be some other coins taking up space then!

I have bought many bags from the mint as well. For some reason mine can't stay closed. They always seem to get opened. Hmmmm.
If you find an error / variety you can usally make up the premium and then some. If not then you have some overpriced coins.
How do you keep your bags closed? Even my mint rolls open themselves up.

Where do banks get their change from? People bring in their change to exchange for paper but in order to maintain a a good relationship with their business customers banks have to have a large amount of change on hand. The US mint supplies the Federal reserve with coinage. The federal reserve distributes this to banks. So Go into a bank and ask for $100 in Qaurters. Chances are that you will get a mix of home wrapped and fed wrapped rolls. the fed wrapped rolls are usually mixed but every now and again you will get some that are all BU with the same date and mint mark. So it is possible to get the new State Quarter series for instance from a bank and not direct from the mint. It just takes a little effort on your part. Hint. Pick a bank that has a direct deposit coin counting machine that way you will not make the tellers mad when you keep bringing your change back to swap it for new stuff. Sometimes you can even talk to the person who does the ordering and get them to order from the fed for you. I collect Wheat back pennies and have found most of my collection going through rolls of pennies.

Hi Jason, A belated welcome- haven't been on the board much the last week. Your collection sounds neat- pretty amazing about your 1804 Draped Bust quarter. Obviously it should be in a holder and in a dry location away from temperature extremes with some silica gel-I imagine you gleaned that from the beginner info. Regarding searching bags- cave troll regularly seaches boxes of halves and can give you info on what he finds. From those who searc boxes of pennies, it seems that about 1 in 100 or so are wheatbacks. Rgoodie is correct- Susan can vouch for tradernick as well. Don

I can keep my bags closed and even sealed in the original box because I don't actively pursue error coins. If I did, those bags wouldn't stand a chance. I have a few struck of center Lincolns lying around here somewhere and no where I can pick up others relatively cheap but have no desire to collect them and actually have no idea where these came from. Probably should find an appropriate home for them as there are others who go out of there way to find them and build collections and I just throw them in a jar or drawer after putting them in a 2X2!

Man, I am going to have to start proof reading my posts before I hit submit them! I go out of my way to mispell words as often as possible. My brain and eyes go faster than my fingers!
