Ok, I'm bored. It's icy out and I'm stuck in the house and feeling a little mischievous so I'll make a contest.

No cheating and looking at references for this one. Scout's honor. I'm trusting all of you out there.

Whoever can name the most Islamic mint towns wins a nice uncleaned Roman bronze. All regions and periods from Ummayid to the fall of the Ottomans will count.

There's a ton of them - Omer Diler managed to fill three volumes with town names and their epithets.

I'll even ship your prize outside the US.

Contest ends tomorrow at midnight, Eastern (USA) time.

Double super bonus points if you can FULLY identify the ruler, dynasty, denomination and mint of this coin: (translation = 1 extra coin if you name the most mint towns, or I'll just send you a coin if you're the first to get it)

Contest---Name-As-Many-Islamic-Mints-As-You-Can

Good luck!

Darn... I wanted to participate but thought for some reason that the contest went on for longer than a day.
It didn't help that, since Islamic is about as far from my interests as it gets, all my attempts on thinking of any Islamic mints were "Istanbul... Istanbul... is Fals a mint or a denomination?" and I kept drawing blanks after that. I did remember at least one likely (Cairo) and one definite (Balasagun... long story) while writing this post
That said, I would never have guessed Tiberias (even though I probably visited that place - well I visited a place named Tiberias, not sure if it's the same one).

Ottomans minted coins in more than 40 cities until the end of their days. Even, sometimes coins were minted while the Sultan was in a campaign. Constantinople, Bursa, Edirne, Selanik, Cairo, Gumushane and Iznik are the common ones.

I only know about it because one of my only two Islamic coins was struck there

I believe its the town in Israel (not completely sure though - I typed in Tiberias and it led me to this article): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiberias
