When using the EOS software to shoot photos I have a couple of questions when shooting in M mode:

  • Sometimes when I hook up, the shutter & aperture settings show up on the screen (and can be adjusted) and other times they don't. Anyone know why?

  • Typically the image on the screen looks great, and even the image that pops up when I release the shutter looks good. When I later view the raw images, however, they typically look significantly darker (almost unusable) than they did on the screen. What am I doing wrong?

  • While tethered is there a way to meter for suggested settings or is it just a trial & error process?

Thanks for any insight that can be offered!

I had the same problem, look at page 5 of the thread I linked below (Posted about halfway down). Ray suggested switching the camera to AV mode, which worked well to get rid of this problem.

I have had the same problem for a long time.using all the other modes. "A-depth, M ect...EVEN though we are supposedly in a manual mode....the settings chosen don't reflect what your outcome is..AS CB notes in his Exceptional thread.....use AV and F/8..I use ISO 100 200 MAX so now there is little left to adjust /shutter speed..to get the right outcome.
BY the way CB thats a great thread!! Gene

Thanks Gene

Be sure to read rmc's thread as well (Under $400 set-up) it has a lot of useful information.

Attach and turn the camera on first, for your operating system to detect. Then launch Zoom Browser. Some have had success keying the camera attachment to EOS Utility ("Always use this program with...."), but that's been less successful for me so I always do it as above.
