I got this in a coin lot recently, I'm not familiar with grade on U.S. coins, thanks in advance for your help and replies, cheers, Jon.

Jon, nice find. I can't tell from the pics if it's all original skin or has toned over, what's your call? The color is just off on my end.

Originality aside, appointments look VF25/30 or so

VF-30. Not sure about the originality although I do think it would grade problem free. Nice find!

thank you so much, I looped it at every angle and there's no trace of cleaning, in the pics it does not show the dirt accumulated and in the hand looks very genuine. I'm using fluorescent light of lighting which I'm sure does not help any.

I've never certified a coin, should this one be certified? Thanks, Jon.

Certified at VF25 or VF30 problem free is probably near a one hundred fifty (us) dollar coin

It does not need to have hairlines to have been cleaned. It could have been water and a rag in 1879 and that person using that method to wipe it down that time caused a compromise to the originality of the surfaces, hence the questionable color.

Personally I wouldn't. Sending coins off to be certified is expensive if you don't do it in bulk. The value of this coin wouldn't likely increase enough to justify the expense in my opinion.

Il like it at VF-25. Looks original to me. I would leave it raw if it were me, but I don't slab anything.
