Cool! Another 'bust' type for me, though a rather younger 'Marianne' to my eyes. 20 Centavos of Portugal. CuNi, 23mm, 6g.

I have a few of the 20F's around which I bought for melt. I like the Art Deco design but unless they're BU Liberty appears to have a dirty face. They also take on a greyish cast as they wear.

KM Y6 Venezuela 1 Centavo. Copper. 10.9g 30.5mm My understanding is that some of these were struck in Birmingham, England and some Paris. The truncation leads me to believe this is from the Paris issue, but if anyone can confirm this or knows different, please chip in! Sorry. Photo in the slab as it's still on it's way from the seller!

This is a very interesting thread, as I am also very interested in French coins, specially those struck during the revolution and during the Napoleonic era. The Sol aux Balances types shown by davidrj and thq is one of my favorites designs -and yes, I agree, as soon, as you are able to read the inscription on the tablet (Les Hommes sont egaux devant la loi) they get pricey. I have yet to add a single one to my collection, but I am looking! The ecu de 6 livres de la Convention is another very appealing coin I think. I was recently able to find this one minted at Lille. You see them around, but most are A mint (Paris). There is a very scarce sub-variety of this coin, without a date.

Nice 6 ecus germanicus. I especially like that reverse die break, which probably caused the weak strike in the center. I haven't found one in my budget range yet.
My interest in French coins also started in the revolutionary and post revolutionary period. Over time I became interested in the 19th century coins, especially Restoration and Second Republic silver. Except for the 5F, coins are often extremely scarce, and present a collector's challenge to find. I've also read a lot of the literature from the period - Hugo, Dumas, Flaubert, and Balzac - and the coins are a connection to that period of upheaval.

Another Marianne to go with yours Christian. This one a proof (belle Épreuve) 20 centimes. Lagriffoul's slightly more traditional version!

But more importantly (and thanks enormously to matthewvincent for advice, information and patience(!) ) finally ... an American coin for my collection!! A Barber quarter. OK, it's not MS whatever. But then I didn't pay MS money. Quite pleased (and hopefully will still be when it arrives from it's long journey to GB!)

And the last for today (my wallet hopes!) A Portuguese 50 Centavos. I have a later (smaller) Cu-Ni one but fancied a 30mm chunk of silver!
