I think it looks slightly better in person than in the pictures. It really seems like a mint candidate, but I have little experience in this. Any help? I know small changes in grade make huge differences in value for this coin. Thanks for the help!

Nice looking coin with good luster
Cannot quite tell if it is MS or high AU from your pic.

Look for wear on the hair, collar, center sail ribs and globes.
Check with a loupe to see if there are any scuffs in the fields
around the face and ship.

Here is an example of a mid grade AU:

Here's another AU with a better strike:

to the CCF and our commemorative forum.

It would be much easier to opine on your coin if the photograph had been taken out of the 2x2 ... not sure in your images what is on the coin versus the plastic.

That said ... my opinions based on what I can see in the provided images ...

The coin has obvious luster and obvious circulation wear ... what concerns me are the horizontal scratches evident on the obverse ... indicative of a hard rub (cleaning).

My opinion ... AU details - cleaned.

I agree with nickelsearcher, viewing the coin through the 2x2 holder makes it difficult.

That said, my eyes also see lines on the obverse that are indicative of a cleaning that involved a physical wiping of the coin (vs. a quick dip in a solution that removes tarnish/toning). I also see a number of points of wear on the obverse and reverse along with strong contact marks on Columbus' portrait.

"AU Details / Improperly Cleaned" is my assessment.

AU & cleaned, a decent looking coin but not much value in this condition
