I received this my 1870 MS63 3 cent in the mail today. It looks like if the slab has damage on it or was tampered with and resealed with glue? When comparing it with my other 3 ANACS holders, the edges are smooth (mine for the most part are not), there's no beads on the edges of the seam(glue?), and the edges are mostly transparent where as this one isn't. When I press on the center of the coin, I hear a noise kinda like a snapping one? On my other ones I don't hear anything. It was shipped to me in a medium sized bubble mailer (number 0 I believe) and that's all. It was also insured. Seller has a 100% feedback and is a power seller that has been on ebay since 1999, so I don't think they're trying to pull a fast one, but you never know.
I'll let the pictures speak.

The coin, just in case if it was switched. It's suppose to be an MS63.

The scratch coming from her mouth is on the holder, maybe on the inside. Oh, and there's no red on the coin, that's just a reflection from my shirt and the coin has luster to it.

Are you happy with the coin? Is it "all there" and good for the grade? If so, who cares about the holder. Break it out and set it free!

The earlier "new" ANACS slabs were somewhat weak, and could show some of the symptoms you describe. I had a few in my own possession.

The coin itself sure looks 63. It's a nice one - the strikethrough (a string, probably) and the Mechanical Doubling add to its' interest, if not its' value.

I have a new old anacs slab that looks just like that. The thing is the coin I bought is a bison DDO and I can't find the DD. I suspected it had been cracked out and re-glued but I heard about these early new slabs..

I think the coin might be the correct coin and that I am just blind. And I think the DDO is very minor.

Those "new and improved" ANACS slabs had a nasty habit of being opened by some people's bare hands. This could very well be the case with your coin. However, if you like the coin, then who cares?

I like the coin, but I'm more worried that the slab isn't as airtight as it was before. Either way, I think I'm going to have to have it re slabbed. The thing is that the edges looked funny, like if there was excess glue coming out from the seams. I did a search and I found this http:// ****&threadid=590790
and I was wondering if someone was trying to do something funny. I still can't grade the coin myself because, I'm still waiting for my ANA grading book to come for I make a finial judgment on it.

Amazon99,
I think MS63 is a fair grade for this coin but you did it right in picking out a 3CN with a great strike

As anyone who has searched for MS 3CNs knows that even slabbed MS examples can have flatness on the numeral and hair. Full strike and eye appeal make for a much more satisfying purchase

Without seeing the slab in person I'd have to say hat this is one of the stronger cases for a slab having been tampered with.

I agree it's a nice coin, and I don't want to give it up. I wonder if the insurance I got will cover the price of getting it re slabbed?

Coinder101, just wondering what makes you think it was tampered with?

If not happy with holder or want confirmation submit to ANACS for recapsuling(usually costs about $5). Then you'll be as happy as you expected to be when you bought it! I agree with Super Dave...NICE COIN
