So this coin appears to be of the "cup coin" ilk. And this is territory that is quite alien to me. While it is evident that they were often poorly struck, I am not sure as to how they were used in circulation. Were they chopped up in order to make change. Or is this coin merely struck on a very small flan?

Any help IDing this byzantine coin would be appreciated! On the obverse I can only see the forward-looking face of a king (or possibly of a Christian icon), and the reverse appears to be a bit of a mess in terms of details.

Thanks!

This is a clipped trachy (cup coin), most likely from the Latin ruler period 1204-1261. It has been clipped from an earlier coin possibly Manuel I or Alexius III but there isn't enough detail to be certain.

echizento- Thanks for the input! I am very curious to hear more about this. Why in particular would this be a coin clipped during the Latin Ruler period?

Unfortunately, I think that a lot of my coins in the uncleaned lot are clipped fragments of Byzantine coins. :(

I have never been able to find out why this was done, but during this period most of all the types were reduced in size and weight.

echizento & Masis- Thanks for the help!

Also, there is a clear delta to the right of the head of the emperor. Do you guys know what this may indicate? Could this detail help ID the coin in any way?

Probably for "Despot".
