Yes, I've seen this before. There was CCF topic on this a few months ago. Nice piece but there are better things to spend 600k on.

Doesn't this suggest that a $2.5 Planchet was NOT used?

1900 MS65 PCGS. Col. E.H.R. Green; B.G. Johnson; John Beck (Abner Kreisberg Corporation, 1/1975), lot 609; Mike Byers; Auction '89 (Superior, 7/1989), lot 856; Bowers and Merena (8/1991), lot 4103; recently PCGS authenticated as a 1900 Indian cent struck on a gold $2.50 planchet, and graded MS65. The 1991 ANA catalog gives a weight of 65.8 grains, 1.3 grains too much for a quarter eagle planchet.

The detail of the strikes seems surreal on this peace, perhaps because the press was calibrated to strike a much harder alloy than gold.

That is a simply FANTASTIC error coin! I thought I had seen it in a Heritage auction ... how much did it bring there?

You're thinking of this one, I believe:

There are three of them known. I'm not so sure that $600k is out of line for this coin, although he'd probably come down if you waved half a million dollars in his face.

Not that I'm going to do that any time soon.

That's the one! Thanks for the link. Wow, it has gotten better, hasn't it?

Best Regards,
