Here's a piece of notgeld I fished out of a banknote box for $1, my only notgeld so far. It has one or two folds but nothing major. The design is very charming. I guess I would like a rough valuation and maybe a decoding of the complicated Gothic lettering - my grandfather could probably read it but I can't.

Unlike German city-based notgeld, Austrian state-based notgeld notes are listed in the Pick "Volume 1 Specialised issues" banknote catalogue. This one is listed in my copy of pick as P# S120. It comes in four flavours: brown, violet, black and green, all listed at the same value of 20 cents in Unc.

The lines in Fraktur on both sides read the same: Gutschein des Landes Oberosterreich (Voucher of the State of Upper Austria). The cursive script on the obverse below the Fraktur heading is trickier, but the word opposite the year 1921 is Linz, the name of the state capital.

Fraktur I can read, also because it is sometimes used, even today, when "tradition" is to be conveyed - pub signs, etc. :) The Sütterlin script, hmm. Here is my guess; the slashes indicate a new line.

Gutschein / des Landes / Oberösterreich
Voucher of the State of Upper Austria

für die Einlösung bis / zum öffentl. verlaut- / barten Giltigkeitster- / min haftet das Land.
The state is liable for the redemption by the publicly announced validity date.

Linz 1921 / Der Landeshauptmann
(that would be a kind of governor)

Die Landes ... something :)
