Well, I broke down and purchased a coin in a NGC label. Now I'm needing to know, do I have to register it? If not, what's the serial number for?

You only need to register it if you want to do the registry sets, if not it doesn't matter at all and all you need to do is own it and enjoy it.
The serial number is on the front by the barcode. It should be several numbers with a - towards the end and a few more numbers.

The serial number is primarily a double-check to make sure the slab and coin really belong together; a fake slab maker or crackout artist might not get the serial number right. You can go to the NGC website, look up the serial number and make sure that (a) they really do have a coin with that number that they've slabbed, and (b) the description matches the description on your label. They may (or may not) also have pictures of it in their database you can compare your slabbed coin with.

So what is a registry set? I saw the serial number. I was just wondering if I needed to let NGC know that I own it now or whatever. Like I said, I'm a newb to this.
I always figured that if I were to own a certified coin it would be like a 1909S VDB, this isn't that coin, but I will definitely enjoy it.

Registry sets are basically where you can just show off what you have. Theres a bunch of different ones like type sets or sets for series where you can put your coins into the system and load them into the set. The top rated ones are really competitive with a huge amount of money spent to one up each other, but most are just people filling their own sets showing it off. Kind of like making a thread with pictures of your coins. Its not something you have to do but it is an option.
But you dont need to do anything along the lines of letting ngc know youre now the owner of it.

Great help guys! Thank you! I'll definitely check out NGCs web-site and see what it says about my coin.

Registry Sets are the TPG's way of talking you into buying the slab and not the coin. Insidious, those guys are, but it was a brilliant marketing move on their part.

I agree with the buy the coin, not the slab. I may have done the opposite on this one, but I had to have it and have no regrets buying it. I really hope to not make a habit of it!!
I'm not posting a pic of it on here, but plan on posting it tomorrow on the "Let's get on the ship" thread. I do not know how to post a link to other threads on here or I would.

Just click into that thread, Copy what you see in the browser address bar, and Paste that whole into a post. Doesn't matter how long that address is, as the forum software automatically cuts it down to manageable size without destroying the link.

Now for the next bit of fun. Look right above your last post, at the little line of icons. See the one on the right, looks like a globe with a blue arrow pointing to the right? If you click that, it'll pop up a window with a link to that exact post which you can drop into another thread.

NGC actually has a app where you can scan the bar code of the label and it will show a picture if they have it in the database and its price currently as well as previous and current auctions. Nifty tool
