No additional information was given about it. Only description is "## AU 1931 Zuid Afrika 1/4D/Tickey ##" . Though I should add this person has sold thousands of coins in the past and I didn't see any negative reviews, in the contrary. But being that this is a very rare one, the chances of a forgery is always there.... Can anyone verify? Sorry I only have a picture.

Hehe lol sorry about that. I'm actually in an auction currently with this coin. Just afraid someone might snatch it and it may afterall been real. I should add though that I'm not a coin collector at all. I know nothing about them. But from general knowledge I know this coin can be quite a pretty penny (haha no pun intended).
But something about this coin strikes me odd. Is it common for people not to include certification proof etc?

But it doesn't really matter what the outcome is , cause it think I might just have developed a new hobby :) !!

Perhaps I have the wrong source of information, but isn't the 1933 1/4d the valuable one?

I believe the denominations have become confused. A "tickey" is the South African slang word for a threepence, not a farthing. It is the 1931 threepence that is super-scarce.

There are two varieties of farthing in 1931: one that says "1/4 penny" and one that says "1/4 D". This one, the one that says "1/4 penny", is cheap and common. Worth a couple dollars in this condition.

Thank for clearing that up for me Sap. I really appreciate it ! Atleast I've learnt something. Well it doesn't seem like all is lost.

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post links. But after you gave me the correct terminology I searched 1931 1/4 penny and ...

So what's your take?

Overpriced, though that coin is less worn than the coin in the OP, and it is in an American "third party grader" holder - which typically adds about $30 to $50 to the price of anything. The price I quoted was derived from the NGC world coins database which, although run by that same TPG company, lists prices for "raw" coins.

Given that ebay sellers name, I'd assume they were specialists in South African things. It's possible the catalogues are out-of-date and people in South Africa or elsewhere are paying more than catalogue for this coin, but if so I haven't heard of it. $60 is, of course, what the dealer is asking for it, not what it will actually sell for. Come back to that listing in a few weeks and see if anyone actually buys it at that price. If anyone does, frankly, I think they're overpaying.

Hi there

The 1931 South African Farthing is not one of the rare Farthings. The realy rare ones are 1926, 1933, 1934 and 1936.

Two types of 1931 Farthings were minted. The one has Zuid Afrika and the other Suid Afrika as the Afrikaans on the coins. The Suid coin is the rarer one (book value about $100 in UNC), while the Zuid coin is only $35 in UNC.

154 233 coins were minted, of which 62 are proof (book value about $2000).

Hope this helps.

In response to your query in the description - this coin would appear to be legit.
