Did you get a personal reply from the bay or was it an automated response? Might be worth referring them to the previous sale.

I will phone them in the morning PP and will record the conversation for posting here.
For the sake of 200 odd quid, I am quite happy to get the coin in hand for a bit of ammunition. Its a shame ccf doesn't have a person that takes charge of dealing with fake sellers like this one. I have to go to a couple of my shops tomorrow after lunch, but I will take some legal advice before going out and find out exactly what can be done, legally, to 'name and shame' such sellers.

I absolutely wouldn't pay him a penny, unless you are trying to preserve your rating on ebay. In which case accept and return it. Trouble is, it will only turn up again to sucker someone else.

Not sure why you can't retract your bid I thought if item was not as described you could cancel the bid.

I don't know a lot about this type other than it's a very rare coin and the chances of one showing up on other than very high end auctions is slim to none. I'm not seeing any outward signs of casting so whoever made it did a good job. The Patina doesn't look right though. I have to agree with the rest that it's a fake. If the seller is on the up and up you should be allowed to with draw your bid. The piece should be withdrawn from the auction and all bids cancelled.

Metdet71:
Probably the easiest way to get this one withdrawn from sale is to have an independent (from a bidder) party, do it for you.
Otherwise, it could be seen that the bidder has just changed his mind on what is alleged (by the seller), to be a genuine coin.

As mentioned in the "Look at that nose" post, this seller "Saxbys-Coins" is on Forum Ancient Coins Notorious Fake Sellers List.

It is worth looking at that list if you wish to avoid bidding on sellers of fake coins auctions.
