So long story short...going through some of my grandmothers (she passed a couple years ago) misc. stuff and came across this nice little surprise! A 1950-D Jefferson nickel. I naturally got abit excited! Then I read the packaging...Ouch! Was there a really a time when a BU/MS 1950-D was selling for $466.60? She often bought stuff from readers digest ads, shopping networks etc... but I really hope she didn't pay that for this. Made me sad. Happy I got found the coin though...just kinda got a knot in my stomach. *In case it's hard to read. The package is from Littleton Coin Co. "Priced according to condition @ $466.60". *I removed it and placed it into an airtite! Pics out of the packaging:

Beautiful coin.
I think the 466.60 us like PCGS where 466 designates the coin series (1950-D nickel) and .60 is the grade (MS60)

Gorgeous 50-D. I wish I found that. And I'm glad she didn't pay that much for it

Does anyone know what the peak price for a 1950-D was? My 1956 RedBook lists it at 45 cents, so I guess that was before the run-up. My 1994 reference book lists it at $12, and I believe the hoard had already been released by then.

My 1964 RedBook says $15. That one is nice. Looks like some steps are visible too.

Should easily be a $10 to $20 coin pending the seller. Knowing Littleton, I'd still be worried about how much she paid. Yet really nice coin.

the 466.60 is the item number. Littleton currently sells these for $32. Way overpriced. I am thinking that she got a bad deal because like Carl said, They are known for overpriced stuff.

I think the max price back in the early 60's reached $45. That was well before the era of that Littleton packaging style. I've seen a lot of people bring in inherited Littleton coin in those packages to coin stores expecting the receive the "prices" shown on the packages. "What do you mean you'll only give me $5 for that 1950-D nickel? You're trying to rip me off! I says right there it's worth $466.60!"

Quote: I says right there it's worth $466.60!" That was my first impression...without this site and NumisMedia I wouldn't have known otherwise...as I have never bought anything from Littleton. Confident she did overpay...but at least fairly confident it wasn't $400.00+.

The coin collection that I recently bought/helped sell had a few Littleton-graded coins. Had to calm my wife down when she saw a 1936 Buffalo nickel in F-12 "priced" at $716.12! At least she had fun imagining a shopping spree for a few minutes ;)
