So I got a little ahead of myself when I was buying some Whitman folders and decided to buy a Franklin halves folder. I have none of these, but that is also the beauty of it. Trying to fill it. I'm not looking for any spectacular.

So I'm looking for Franks in the F12 to XF45 range I think because those are circulated, will be cheaper, and I do not care for MS60+ specimens as I am on a budget.

So I ask you all in the modern coin section, what is a fair price to pay for Franklin halves? I found a man online offering me 17x FV but I don't really have any good pictures but I'm sure I could ask him so I could get a better judge for quality. I saw on (124) Not Allowed - Auto-Removed pure melt is 7.29 so I feel like $8.5 is reasonable (if they're decent quality).

I'm hoping you all have some good moments before I have a moment. Thanks all!

My local shop will sell circulated Franklins as "junk" silver which is currently about $15 x face. The first set of Franklins I assembled, I got all but 1 or 2 from the junk bin.

Have you check prices on lots of Franklins on ebay? You may be able to pick them up in groups of 10 or 20.

You meant 15x Face not $15 I assume.

15 face is great considering if you got them for spot silver it's just a tick over 14.5x face. Should I look ebay before I go to him or should is 17x just a plain ripoff?

If silver is at $20, 'junk' half dollars should be about $7.50. I'd pay no more than $10 for collectable examples. Be careful selecting your halfs, and you should be able to put together a very presentable set.

10 bucks is 20x face, luckily I didn't need a calculator. I feel so I've gotten 20x as the top, and 15x as the low. I feel like 17x is a good compromise. I don't know if he'll pick out certain Dates/Mints for me before shipping. He has $188 in face!! I think that's quite a bit. I'll keep waiting for more info.

As long as you arent trying to get fbl franklins you can actually get them all pretty cheap even uncir. Definitely check out ebay though, this is the exact type of thing that sells cheaply there being that its so common only the graded ones carry significant premiums.

You should be able to get many just over spot silver.

I know little or nothing about key dates, or mints.

Just a suggestion, this was my strategy in my franklin collection1948-1956 you can pick decent ones out of junk silver boxes often times. But the 57-63 coins I found for not that much more money, you can purchase mint sets perhaps find some ms grade variety coins type b quarters or rpm coins and get Unc franklins, any of the remaining coins you dont want you can sell back to them and purchase more franklins yea its a little more but not that bad and you get unc coins right outta the cello. Justba thought kinda hip checks the whole inexpensive direction but overall and long term worth it and another thing often times not a coin shop will sell a unc coin for a small premium over melt and it doesn't hurt to ask them you may get lucky and instead of pay 7.50 for a beat up coin maybe get unc cojns for 10-12 bucks a piece ya never know but good luck just thought I would share my experience

You learn something new every day. After googling and reading about fbl franklins, you are right that I do not want to shell out the extra for those. So under 17x face?

There is some great websites you can use to calculare face value. And depending on the source you buy and sell too gives the over under bid/ask price if a seller is going 1 over spot and buying spot thats super fair after all they have to keep the lights on. ebay bulk is decent price when you chase one coin say a 1948 franklin that makes things a little crazy on the bay. I dont shy away from paying even 2 over spot.. But these are my experinces when I started this hobby I had no experience and no knowledge other than knowledge on collectable firearms which was a decent back ground to have. For fun I will go to the coin shop buy 100-200 dollars in junk silver pick through them look for erros varities whatever and then take them back and sell them sometimes silver spikes and I get all my money back sometimes it drops and I may lose 5-20 bucks sometimes I store them for awhile and watch silver spot and try and bank a couple bucks.. But unless it jumped considerably the gains/losses are barely noticeable. But again these are just my theories in coin shop buy sell strategies I do this for fun and enjoyment!

Should I try to shop for a good price on ebay or just go with as many as I need from this guy selling 17x face, which by todays prices looks like $1.20 over spot. I feel like that's pretty good and he said if I buy enough it's free shipping.

You can honestly complete a whole album from your local coin store junk silver box of frankies. Unless you want uncirculated, all of them are pretty much worth meltish.

I'm unfortunately at school and can't go to my LCS since there isn't one in the area, I'll definitely go take a trip when I go home for break though.
