Picked this interesting sheet up the other day:

1862-State-Of-Louisiana-Uncut-Currency-Sheet
1862-State-Of-Louisiana-Uncut-Currency-Sheet

From my understanding, it's an uncut sheet of obsolete currency issued by the State of Louisiana while under Confederate control. The notes were printed on the back of remainders from the Mississippi Exchange Office.

The sheet does show some soiling, several pinholes, as well as several marginal tears and tape work.

Can anyone shed some light on this piece in terms of both value and scarcity?

Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Very cool! The mention of a "definitive treaty of peace" between the CSA and USA is awesome - especially since a couple months later that year New Orleans would be taken by the Union Army and LA returned to the Union. I figure, since LA was under Confederate control for just over a year, those would be pretty scarce.

Not sure on rarity, but a quick search through Heritage Auction archives finds a 58 apparent that sold last April for $350. The description on that lot and a few other examples did not mention anything about rarity and these notes are not in the Haxby obsolete books.

Shull's 2007 book "Southern States Currency" shows them as a second series, issued from Baton Rouge. They each have a rarity of R4, or 1500 to 2500 known. Values are listed at around $40 to $110 depending on condition but I thInk those values are out of date. A full sheet is exceptionally nice especially since the back notes are also uncut.

Thanks a ton for the information, everyone.

Mgillette, that's what was intriguing to me too! I've never seen anything like it before.

BisonMatt, I was a bit confused when I couldn't find any reference to them in Haxby. Thanks for the nudge towards Heritage, though. I noticed I had my search wrong and was only turning up single notes.

Jimjumper, thanks for the rarity information. That's very helpful. The individual notes don't seem too hard to find, based on what I've seen. Sheets are a different story though, as you mentioned. I spent the last hour trying to find any information I could on sheets of these notes, but I came up with nothing.

Very cool pickup. Love that they are printed on different banknotes, which makes them very unique as I believe I've only seen one or 2 other notes that did something like that. I love individual sheets but so often when I inquire about them the price sky high even on material that is in VF condition or worse. I'd really love to own uncut sheets of some nationals but I'm not bankrolling like that so it'll remain a pipe dream for now.

Shull's book does list sheets as well. According to it, this one is a rarity 5. 801-1500 remaining. $695 estimated value.

Obsolete notes printed on the back of other notes are very common.
