Hello,

I was wondering if any harm would come from storing a dime in a quarter 2x2 or a half dollar in a dollar 2x2. I prefer a 2x2 that's slightly larger then the coin because it closes better( just my personal preference). Could storing coins in the wrong 2x2 harm my coins?

Thanks for the help.

Should not be a problem, provided that there are no small loose particles that are liable to detach from the coin.
Aesthetically, it DOES look better if an appropriate size 2x2 is used. The coin is then prevented from rotating within the flip.

If the coins are handled a lot they will move around in a larger 2x2. This can cause rubs on the surface of the coins. Not a huge deal with circulated coins but I have seen proofs and BU coins with light damage because of it.

Many places sell them by the method shown in CoinCollector2012's reply. At a few coin shows I go to there is a dealer that sells only coin collecting STUFF. All his 2x2 flips are labled as in that reply. Getting to be like sox. One size fits all. Not exactly but many people only use a few sizes. Cuts down on to much of a pile of something that may not get used a lot.
As to any problems. Unless you shake them a lot, a dime in a cent flip can not move a lot.

I prefer to use the next larger size 2X2 when possible because you can see the edge and the coin doesn't look "crowded" in the holder as it does when you use the "correct" size.

My list
dime in cent holder
cent in nickel
nickel in quarter
quarter in small size dollar 2x2 (These work well for a LOT of world coins as well)
Small dollar and half in half dollar (The dollar size is a little large for the half dollar but will work)
Large size dollar in either dollar size or 2.5X2.5 crown size holders.

The small size dollar size can be a bit difficult to locate. When I need them and find them I buy them in 1K holder lots. I use them more than most other sizes.

Assuming they're not going to be moving in and out of that 2x2 very often, you can use as large as you like by the simple expedient of a couple strategically-placed staples to keep the coin in the corner of the flip.

I always up-size my 2x2s by at least one size, at least for those used for long term storage.

For short term I tend to use the half dollar holders, even for much smaller coins. It makes it easy to get the coin out by cutting the plastic with a utility knife.

I see no problem other than if its not stapled tightly the coin could move around. However if done right and you put it into one of those plastic 2x2 sheets/pages that holds 20 coins you should be good and it would look nice to show others

When I think the rim/edge matters I will up the size.
I also wouldn't recommend putting 2 or more coins into a single flip unless it has the extra windows. The coins will flop around and hit each other if you do.
