tnx guys, so, the impurities in the nickel corrode out leaving craters on the surface, just a guess.

No actually nickel is one of the least corrosive metals, this damage was probably done by a corrosive chemical such as acid or what have you.

Hi Dominic, and welcome to coin community!PMD When coin collectors want to determine when a coin has been purposely altered after leaving the mint,Post Mint Damage. as oppossed to an actual in house mistake on the coin .Like this nickel pictured above, some one for some reason, dropped acid on it after it left the mint,PMD !
