I appreciate all of the good info. I actually went and got my first box of pennies before this last weekend. I went to my bank first to see what they had and I got a quick and simple, "No" from the teller after confirming with another guy. The second bank I went to didn't hesitate. The teller grabbed a box of pennies and I was on my way.
I thought it was strange finding Canadian pennies in these rolls, but I've found that it's pretty common. I believe I have a total of 5 right now. I also have about 12 wheat pennies and one indian head pennies. So much fun. Can't wait to get another box.

Love finding the Indian heads! My oldest coin is a 1906 Indian I found when I was a kid going through change with my dad about 10 years ago

I got ~200 US pennies in first/last box, but I live about an hour from the US border so I wasn't surprised with that. It was either my nickel box or penny box where I had an entire roll of US coins.

I used to love handing over a box of pennies to the bank teller with a single hand and watch them struggle to lift the thing, made me bust out LOL. Appreciate your pennies while you can because they might go away some day.
Once I was handing over about $2000 which included $1000 in toonies and loonies for my tuition and the teller drops them and 1-2 rolls cracked open all over the floor! Lucky she didn't drop them on her foot, silly person.

"Letting them know you are doing this with your children is a good idea."
AMEN! Say, "My kids are keen on money and enjoy looking at them." That should warm their hearts up to you.

Hmmm... I'm 20 years old. I doubt I could pass off the kid technique!

Try nieces and nephews. You can pass that off pretty easily.

I'm also a newbie who picked up my first box of pennies last week (haven't had the chance to go through them yet). But when the teller kindly asked what I needed them for, I said my wife is an elementary school teacher, and she was doing some sort of project with her students. My wife is a teacher, but I obviously made up the second part. That seemed to be a good enough answer.

Normally when tellers ask what I need coin for, I'm mum, you see, it's really none of their business.
One time this cute teller asked if I was seeing anyone. Oh geez, why did I open my mouth. Now I'm married to her and have a couple kids too. Just a word of caution to you...well, it's all turned out good for that matter, lol.

One time I was asked why I needed the coins in rolls, and I told them flat out. "I am looking for ones form 2009, because it seems to be missing in our area, so something drastic must have happened to them all." They laughed and asked me if I was keeping the new-new quarters too and I told her, "Oh no, they are doing more?" The tellers laughed and expect me to get boxes after that. This was the bank that doesn't required a business account to get boxes. The other one does and doesn't really care what you want a box or 3 of them for so long as you don't bring them back to them.
Something has gone wrong with our banks where they don't want to do their jobs and duties associated with the FDIC insurance and other such stuff, like making change or selling coins to customers.

Only one time out of over fifty boxes of rolls I was asked what are all these for, poker night?
I said I am gluing them to the ceiling of my apartment
She said really!
I said no
She made a sad face
I laughed.

I'm just glad I'm not the only one getting weird looks or questioned. I just wish it was a little less awkward. I guess that's part of developing a relationship with a teller though.

Before I knew there were boxes to be had, I was jsut getting an assorment of rolls, and the wondered what for all the time. Since it is the one teller allowed to go into the vault where the boxes are kept now that I have to go to, all the other tellers pretty much keep their nose out of it. Probably why there is always that one head teller that doesn't put off their customer in fear they will withdraw everything and take their money to another bank and complain to the district manager about the bank itself and the teller finds she is working behind a register at the local fast food joint next. Their are some rude ones out there, just grin and bear it until you get the right teller and when you get the right one, be as polite as you can and you will have them asking you every time you visit if you are ready for another box.
Tellers just don't understand it is not their job to ask why it is their job (to do or die) make the transactions for their customers and account holders.

If it isn't pennies you guys are getting you can always use the "I work at a vending machine business." I've had a man dump 800 in quarters where I work because of his job with vending machines. I didn't have fun swapping the bags for him though.
