I didn't think Canada issued a specimen set for 1954, either. It seems to me that a nicely matched 1954 set in uncirculated or better, may have been put together years ago by a private collector. At a later time, fortune had favoured that collector, when nice 'original' case was found for another date.
Hence, a 'truthful' description of the lot.
I know little about the current pricing of Canadian coins of this period, but my gut feeling is that the 'buy it now' price is way too high.

Do you think it is a PL set that was disassembled from the cardboard or are they just uncirculated coins?

@kitkat, no way of knowing without seeing them in person. The coins were NOT well served being stored in that box with that fuzzy stuff....I shudder to think what the obverses look like.....My guess is that some collector, years ago, put them in a that case from a PL set, but that's a lot of money to risk to surely be disappointed. YOu can an assemble nicer looking set if you are patient....the dollar doesn't look like it has much of a cameo, and there are numerous HC examples from that year...if you are patient, you could collect a nice set of ICCS PL64 HC coins for that money....excepting of course the nickel...

Quote: Nothing original, not even the barcode. I googled it. Apparently modern looking barcodes like that were not used commercially until 1966.

Hi all, I am commenting on the 1954 specimen set as seen in the forum and was on E-bay.I bought this set. On exam it IS a specimen set!I have other sets and it appears the same.I also have 1954 proof-like sets as well as uncirculated ( MS) sets and it definitely is neither. As far as I can figure out the mint makes specimen sets each year (limited numbers ) but only sells to the public certain years - the rest are for presentation etc. I have a 1970 VIP presentation specimen set as well which Prime Minister Trudeau presented to the Chinese etc. and some were sold to the public. Any comments ?

I see you are from Edmonton. Take the set to the the Edmonton Coin show (March 1-2) and show it to Sandy Campbell (Proof Positive Coins), who will have a table at the show. I suspect you'll get an answer in less in a minute whether those coins are specimen strikes or not. http://www.trajan.ca/showbbs/ccn.pl
