Found this quarter a while back and was unsure about it. I just got myself a new scale and decided to post it here on the forum to see if anyone had any ideas. Weighs in at 4.96 grams. What do you guys think?

What does the rim look like on the area where LIBERTY should be? That area looks damaged or altered.

Have you done a drop test to see if it sounds like a normal quarter? The ring/thud/sound should tell you if it sounds real.

I seem to detect a thin band of exposed copper along the face/edge junction on both faces of this coin. And yet the edge betrays no sign of a copper core. These two observations seem mutually incompatible, leading me to suspect that some type of post-strike mischief was involved in producing both features.

Rim looks like slot-machine wear.

Sorry about the pics. I just bought a USB microscope camera(sucks big time, and will probably return for a refund) and was trying it out. What looks like exposed copper in the 2nd and 3rd pictures is actually just the reflection of my houses florescent lighting, there is no copper exposed. I haven't tried a drop test yet, but will be doing that soon.

Since it weighs approximately 5 grams, then it was almost certainly struck on a nickel planchet. I do seem to detect metal flow in the letters of LIBERTY, which would support the idea that this is an off-metal error.
