Lately I've been working on a list of countries that had their own coins for the year 1996. I know I've got some countries listed that did not produce coinage for the year 1996 and am probably missing some countries that did. It would be awesome if someone more knowledgeable of the countries of the world than me could look over/proof my list. Here is what I've got so far: Afghanistan Albania Algeria Angola Argentina Armenia Aruba Australia Azerbaijan Azores Baden Bahamas Bahrain Bangladesh Barbados Bavaria Belgian Congo Belgium Belize Bermuda Bhutan Biafra Bolivia Bosnia-Herzegovina Botswana Brazil Bremen British Virgin Islands Brunel Bulgaria Burundi Cambodia Cameroon Cape Verde Cayman Islands Central African Republic Central African States Ceylon Chad Chile China, People's Republic Colombia Comoros Congo Free State Congo Republic Congo, Democratic Republic Cook Islands Costa Rica Crete Croatia Cuba Curacao Cyprus Czech Republic Danish West Indies Danzig Denmark Djibouti Dominican Republic East Africa East Hopei Ecuador Egypt El Salvador Equatorial Guinea Eritrea Estonia Ethiopia Faeroe Islands Falkland Islands Figi Finland France French Polynesia Gabon Georgia Germany Ghana Gibraltar Great Britain Greece Greenland Guadeloupe Guatemala Guernsey Guinea Guinea-Bissau Guyana Haiti Hamburg Honduras Hong Kong Hungary Iceland India Indonesia Iran Iraq Ireland Republic Iran Barat Isle Of Man Israel Italy Jamaica Japan Jersey Jordan Katanga Kazakhstan Keeling Cocos Islands Kenya Kiau Chau Kiribati Korea Korea-North Korea-South Kuwait Laos Latvia Lebanon Lesotho Liberia Libya Leichtenstein Lithuania Lubeck Luxembourg Macao Macedonia Madagascar Madeira Islands Malawi Malaya Malaysia Maldive Islands Mali Malta Martinique Mauritania Mauritius Mecca Mexico Moldova Monaco Mongolia Montenegro Morocco Mozambique Myanmar Namibia Nepal Netherlands Netherlands Antilles New Caledonia New Guinea New Hebrides New Zealand Nicaragua Nigeria North Viet Nam Norway Oldenburg Oman Pakistan Palestine Panama Papua New Guinea Paraguay Peru Philippines Poland Portugal Prussia Qatar &Dubai Qatar Rhodesia Romania Rwanda Saarland San Marino Sarawak Saudi Arabia Serbia Seychelles Shah Dynasty Sierra Leone Singapore Slovakia Slovenia Solomon Islands Somalia Somaliland South Africa Southern Rhodesia Spain Sri Lanka State Of South Viet Nam Sudan Suriname Swaziland Sweden Switzerland Syria Taiwan Tajikistan Tanzania Thailand The Gambia Tibet Timor Togo Tonga Tonkin Transnistria Trengganu Trinidad &Tobago Tunis Tunisia Turkey Turkmenistan Tuvalu Uganda Ukraine United Arab Emirates United States Uruguay Uzbekistan Vanautu Vatican City Venezuela Viet Nam West African States Western Samoa Yemen Republic Zaire Zambia Zanzibar Zimbabwe If I've missed any countries, or have one listed that did not exist in 1996, please let me know! Thank you all!

I'm pretty sure that all of these: Quote: Baden Bavaria Belgian Congo Bremen Ceylon [except as Sri Lanka, elsewhere in the list] Crete Danzig Hamburg Katanga Kiau Chau Lubeck Malaya North Viet Nam Oldenburg Palestine Prussia Saarland Sarawak State of South Viet Nam Tonkin Zanzibar did not exist, or issue coins, in the 1990s. I probably missed a few other countries that didn't exist (I'm not too good about history, particularly specific national names), and a few (dozen) more countries that existed but didn't issue any 1996-dated money. Honestly, considering the general "quality" of this list, I'm surprised that Russia isn't in it. (Russia, of course, didn't issue any circulation coins in 1996, but did produce some NCLT; not sure if it counts.)

Also no Tibet, Trengganu, Transnistria, (East) Timmor, Southern Rhodesia, etc. as those countries didn't even exist in 1996. You have Unified Korea on the list and North and South Korea. East Hopei was a Japanese Puppet state during WWII. My African history is a little rusty but you have to many Congo's. There are also some failed African states on the list that were long gone by the time 1996 came around. Greenland is part of Denmark and hasn't issued any coins since WWII (?). Shah Dynasty should be removed. There is the issue of currency unions, I don't know how you want to handle that.
That is off the top of my head. There are a lot of errors in the list. I'll check some more out later, but there are some others I suspect are not right. I suggest that you go to en.numista.com and go through the countries and see if they issued any coins during 1996. While not perfect it will make the list much better.

OK, let's see if I can formulate a list, based on your list. Countries which either did not exist or existed but did not issue coins have been deleted. Countries that only issued NCLT are coloured green. Countries that (probably) issued coins in 1996 but either did not date their coins at all or used a different calendar (so do not actually say "1996") are in orange. Countries that weren't on your list but should have been are given a blue asterisk.

While I'm researching the Peoples Republic of China and Taiwan, do they share the same coinage?
Can't seem to find a clear answer through googling.

No, they don't. They have different currencies because they are effectively different countries.

Thanks man, on ebay every Chinese or Taiwanese coin it reads: "People's Republic of China ... TAIWAN"

Quote: "People's Republic of China ... TAIWAN" Well, that's wrong. The official name for Taiwan is "Republic of China". As indicated in my list above, PRC (Mainland China) coins use the AD calendar, written in Western numerals. ROC (Taiwan) coins use the Chinese Republic calendar, where Year 1 is 1912, and almost never use Western numerals to write the date. The currency unit in both countries is called the "yuan" in Chinese. To avoid confusion, the currency of Taiwan is often translated to "dollar", while the PRC currency is often called the "renmimbi yuan" or simply the "renmimbi". But the coins from both countries are called "yuan" in the Krause coin catalogues.
