First off, I've been reading this forum for a couple years, and I finally made the decision to join. Thanks for all that contribute, it's been great!

I've been CRH for a few years, and have been saving any Canadian pennies older than 1985.

So far, I have found a 1932, 37, a couple each of 42-46, several dozen from the 50's, and about 1000 from 60's on.

With the RCM pulling and melting, (since they don't mint), I am wondering:

Is the excitement high enough now to dump some or all of these?
Would I be better off to wait 10-20 years, as more and more get melted, it will be impossible to know what is still being held privately, thus driving cost up, esp on the 30s/40s.

What are you (all) doing with these?

CRH from Vermont...A border state. I'll telly you that it's extremely annoying how many times I get stuck with Canadian pennies and cant use them. I just got back into collecting and am expanding into Canadian coins so I'm hoping to move into penny collecting too.

CRH in Montana, I love 'em, I get tons and I keep them all, they are not legal tender so might as well hold onto them. I even worked out with a few local businesses to let me have their Canadian roll finds. Like Will Rogers almost said, get 'em now, they ain't making anymore of 'em.

It might take a while but heck I figure it is the only foreign set you can complete for under $2.00 with CRH alone... if you are lucky, for Liz at least: 1953-2012, a short list. I'm only missing 1953 and 1958 then spotty after 2000 but I'm working on it.

Older Canadian nickels, dimes and quarters are made of pure nickel so I save them in the hope that nickel will hit $40 an ounce... ... ok maybe not in my life time but I still like them too.

Not quite yet I'm afraid.

Make a full set and hoard the rest, in a few decades you might be able to get a good return on them. I have a bed frame that is the right height to allow cashew jars from Costco under... it's filling up with US and Canadian copper and I'm sleeping fine

CRH in Illinois here. I find I get about 10 to 20 per box of pennies. I tend to:

1. Fill my Canadian folder empty spots.

2. Sort out and keep the extra copper pennies. Also, I run them past the ol' magnet to see if there are any of those in there. have yet to find any.

3. Sell the rest on Craigslist or ebay. I tend to get about 2 cents to 3 cents each for them.

You live in a border state and cant use them? I live in Michigan and Canadian cents flow as though they are US cents here. I can easily get rid of zinc Canadians I get from boxes at any store I purchase something.

Update NY here. Here pennies are intermixed in circulation and 1-2 Canadian cents in customer wrapped rolls is the norm for me. Around here they're as good as US currency (except on the NYS thruway). Even my bank treats them as US currency, but I'm assuming they just try not to notice to save time.

I save them in three different stacks. Earlier than 1980ish for collecting, 1980ish to 1996 for copper hoarding, and any in AU or better condition again for collecting. Same with the nickels, dimes, and quads (but the years vary slightly).
Rest in Peace

Had a few for quite some years as they we my only foreign visitors, then as I got more in boxes, and found they were discontinued, I decided to get a folder to put them in and see how many I could get to fill it before they went away.
