Here's an interesting overdate from an attractive coin series. Seeing how the prior "date" was 1801, the 8 was probably just a mistake, since corrected. It's also one of the few copper coins I have with a milled edge. I'm also guessing the low relief of the obverse was necessary to strike up detail on the lion.

Maybe they prepared many dies in advance with only 18 and the last 2 digits left open.. At the turn of the century they had some left..

Sander, that makes a lot of sense to me! It also explains a lack of repunching on the last 2 digits.

Sander's explanation is correct.

Is easier to find an overdate than a normal one of this coins.
