This is obviously a statistically insignificant measure, but I did a quick analysis on grading populations from PCGS and ANACS.

The results: For this small sample, the mean PCGS grades tend to be nearly a whole grade higher.

The populations sampled are for 1981-P,D,S SBA$.

Again, this sample is so tiny that no generalizations or conclusions ought to be made based upon it. I just thought I would share the data.

I would fit the data with Gaussian curves, but I did this quickly with Excel, not Matlab.

Theres going to be a big bias in the data as high end coins are overwhelmingly in PCGS and NGC holders. Theres really no way to account for it without examining every coin sent in, but I expect any comparison of PCGS/NGC with ANACS to have higher grades in the PCGS/NGC groups as the quality of coins submitted to them is higher.

While fun and interesting to see, the more a coins worth the more I expect to see it in a PCGS/NGC slab unless of course its a details coin from someone looking to have a number grade on it.

Not surprising to see higher grades in PCGS. Most of the best coins encapsulated early in the art of TPG are now in PCGS slabs since they garner the most money at auction. There are a lot of high grade Morgans I know of in PCGS slabs that came from those small white ANACS slabs. nlp

Just thought I'd share the data... IMO, all justifications are purely speculation. I'm presently waiting to get some coins back from ANACS and after looking at them carefully myself, I will consider a cost benefit analysis of attempting some crossovers. One particular coin I have in mind is a 1981-S SBA$ coming back from ANACS as an MS-66 and unfortunately, one of the biggest differences in 66 to 67 is "eye appeal" - more or less a subjective measure.

In a pcgs slab that 81 s 66 is a 400 dollar coin. They only have 2 67s for that one, the chance of it crossing into one is basically non existent. The only chance youd have at 67 would be sending it raw and it better be something that blows away its peers.

Having sent them a lot of sbas I can tell you they arent easy on them. The higher grades represent better coin quality. Those 2k 67s in pcgs slabs might not even fetch half that in an anacs slab. With the upside its worth a shot if yyou can afford it and are sending other stuff anyway, but if youre thinking theyre just easier on them and would have a shot because of that its not the case.

If it doesn't really pop as a superior 66 save the money for more sbas to search for one that does.

PCGS > NGC > ANACS > ICG in order of premium for slabs with same grades. Sure the coins could look identical, but chances are you're going to get more for a PCGS. That's why I think more of the higher end coins are sent to them over lower groups.

I'd have no problem sending my world coins to ANACS (in fact, that's what I'm doing anyways). Just seems that them or NGC are the "preferred" graders for inexpensive world coins. Now if I had one that was going for >$500 and PCGS would grade it, they're getting the coin. Especially if I'm going for a resale.
