I assume the $10 unauthenticated ones like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/221332585477 are fake?

I'm a newbie on them too but from what I remember a few really easy way to rule out a lot of them are to make sure it has a value amount somewhere on it and that it doesn't have a bear(or remotely bear looking like creature) on it anywhere.
also, if it looks too good to be true it probably is. the amounts of replicas/fakes out there of this series is very high.

I know nothing about them, but I have read that they are heavily faked in good gold.
Best taken to an experienced expert in the field.

However, when looking at the style of this one, I do not think that there is even ANY attempt to fool ANYone.

Many of these were made in the 60s & 70s and it seems that there may be collectors for those particular copies. Long ago there was a thread on here detailing the maker and which were the collectable pieces, but I can't find it on the search.

That is a souvenir token, not real California Gold. California gold pieces would have a denomination on it.
