Hello all,
I am wondering if 1981 "type 2" mint sets were made early in 1981 and then changed, Or were they made later in the year and not noticed.
Any help with this would be good. Thanks,

Dale

Welcome to Coin Community, Dale U.

The Type 2's are the later implementation, produced using a new mint mark punch created because of the deterioration of the older one. Given how individual dies were used and age, you can find sets with both types mixed as well.

One thing, there are no type 2 mint sets, they are proof sets.

One thing is for sure, while a later shipped set (December) is more likely to have a Type 2 than one from say October, there are absolutely no guarantees you'll get a type 2 as the coins are not shipped in the order minted. I also don't think anyone knows the date that the switch to the type 2 dies was made.
