When I want-need quarters for the car wash or toll booths

I go to my local 24 hour store.

Some will very willing offer a roll or 2 of any denomination.

If you go to many stores, you will be rewarded.

Maybe easier to get a bank box, but they are not open 24-7.

smart move...........Did yu know....A famour Hoard of circ US coins (1960's,70)was put together by a toll booth operator (24-7), who worked with his brother-in-law coin man,They had all the low mintages- like 1916D merc dime, washington rarities, etc.....So I say you should get some good coins at your store,,,,keep going....I forget the name of hoard- they made good when selling- I think they sold some to Littleton---......Lately I hav been reading about the Redfield Hoard-this is incredible,,,Its about Morgan and Silver dollars.

It was called the New York Subway Hoard assembled in the 1940s. It contained a lot of key date coins and something like 24 complete sets of Barber dimes (excluding the 1894-s proof only). You're right it did sell to Littleton in the 1990s.

I recently read Q. David Bowers's book American Coin Treasures and Hoards it was fascinating reading about various accumulations.

Most stores get their coins from cash logistics companies (Brinks, Loomis, Garda) just like banks. The only source of coins that I have found with a significantly better chance of "keepers" is excessively large coin jars in the homes of old folks or disorganized people with kids. I used to get the "old lady with a peanut butter jar full of loose coins" all the time when I was a cashier, and the number of wheat pennies I got from those was pretty impressive. One lady had 5 wheats in a single dump, including a 1916-S.

Also, as a matter of courtesy, don't rob cashiers of ALL of their coins. They could care less about nickels and dimes, but it's pretty easy to run out of pennies and quarters over the course of a day.
