I've only been coin roll hunting for a couple weeks now and have searched numerous websites trying to figure out what to keep and what to return. The list continues to build, but I want to make sure I'm on the right track and hopefully the veterans here can clear things up and help me compile a full comprehensive list of "keepers". Here is what I have so far.
- Flying Eagle 1856-1858
- Indian Head 1859-1909
- Wheat Pennies 1909-1958
- 1944 D D mint mark stamped on top of "S"
- 1955 D up-right "D" stamped top a horizontal "D"
- 1955 Double-die, date doubled
- 1960 Small Date
- 1969 S Double-die, strong doubling on In God We Trust, Liberty and the Date
- 1970 S Small Date
- 1970 S Double-die, strong doubling in words TRUST & LIBERTY
- 1972 Double-Die (date doubled)
- 1980 D S/D mintmark, shadow of a S mintmark above the D mintmark
- Pre-1982 pennies for copper content (some 1982's/flip test)
- 1982 P Large/Small Dates Copper and Zinc, 1982 D Large Date Copper, 1982 D Large/Small Dates Zinc
- 1983 Double-die, reverse doubled (back) In God We Trust doubled
- 1984 Double-die, Lincoln's Ear is doubled, look at ear lobe
- Close AM's: 1992 P & D, 1998 S, and 1999 S
- Wide AM's: 1999 P, 1998 P, and 2000 P
- 2009's due to low mintage (Look for doubled/extra thumbs and fingers)
- Pretty much anything minted in San Francisco "S"
- Anything with an abnormality

I put that under the general umbrella of "Abnormalities" because there is a chance that any year could have this, correct? However, if there are certain years (as you have listed) then that could be exremely helpful.

Don't forget: 1960 small date 1970-S small date If memory serves, those are worth quite a bit more than your average WAM. Also, keep your eyes peeled for the 7 1982 varieties: 82-P large date, copper 82-P small date, copper 82-P large date, zinc 82-P small date, zinc 82-D large date, copper 82-D large date, zinc 82-D small date, zinc Also the 2009 LP-2 "Formative" pennies have something on the order of 80 different DDR errors. Look for doubled/extra thumbs and fingers.

Good ones Finn, especially the 82 D zincs (hardest of the 7 to find).

Quote:Don't forget the once in a lifetime Flying Eagle cent find! Wow. I didn't even know that existed. I'm guessing this is one of the harder coins to come by. I wouldn't imagine there are many still in circulation.

If you do enough rolls, you'll find some pretty strange things in there. I think the entire community here has found maybe 1 or 2 Flying Eagle cents since the huge cent CRH thread began a few years ago. They were only made from 1856-1858 and never circulated much, so a Flying Eagle cent would have been a noteworthy find even 100 years ago. I think the 1857 and 58 are worth about $10-20 even in the lowest grades. I think the other two massive finds on here have been a 1910-ish European gold coin (from Austria I think) and a 1992-P CAM. I don't know what came of the member who found that CAM (I think it was literally like the third one ever authenticated) but I assume he sold it and is now living on his own private island somewhere. Also do you plan to keep all foreigns you find? I would recommend it, even if you are technically losing money by buying it for a cent--it's pretty fun to build a small collection of world coins that you found in pocket change. I think I've managed to piece together a reasonably complete set of Canadian pennies, at least from about 1960-2006 when they switched to magnetic.

I plan on keeping all foreign coins I find. Regardless of whether they are rare or not, they're pretty cool to have. My CRH goals are to have a complete penny set and to have a 5 gallon bucket of copper pennies.
