I have 30 bucks to spend. Is dimes a good idea? What should I expect? What should I keep?

30 bucks is a start but wont buy you many rolls. If you live in a town with several banks you may be able to hunt those and quickly turn them in at another bank to increase the amount you hunt through. If I had $30 to hunt with I would start with a $25 box of cents or maybe nickels. Good luck either way.

I would 1st ask if they have any halves, you may do well on these, as for dimes they are your best denomination after teller halves to search

Dimes are best before halves, then ford then chevy.

I think BenVA said it best, the more coins you can go through the better. I personally like nickels and think since those aren't poured over for silver as much as other denominations you might have luck.

It really depends on what you're looking for, Silver or copper or numismatic finds.

I would opt for dimes or halves, but you'll have to search a ton before finding much. Just keep that in mind. 1 dime for every $250 and less for half dollars.

Really it comes down to what you are looking for

The one dime box I did had two silvers; one Mercury and one Rosie.

I think your chances of scoring silver in dimes is better than in half dollars, and quarters.....in that order.

In my experience dimes and quarters are the worst for finding silver.

Dimes and quarters circulate daily and go through many more hands who have the potential to spot and remove any silver.

In the 4 quarter boxes I have done 1 found one silver. In the 4 or more boxes of dimes I have done I have found 2.

Halves pay out 10 fold for me compared to dimes and quarters.

Nickels are usually good for 1 silver per 1.5 boxes on average.

Nickels are also great if you want to fill a book. I went all the way back to 1955 and only missing 5 holes (both 2009s) from one box, and have a bunch others. You could easily fill that up. I was skunked for War Nickels, although I got a buffalo. This was from a entire box ($100) though.

Filling a all three Whitman Jefferson nickel books is not that hard, in less than a year I've gotten them all past 1950, missing both 1950's and 2 silvers, also missing 1938, 1939 with mint marks, 8 empty holes total.

I'll agree on quarters, never found a single silver from them but I have gotten some nice finds from dimes. 23 silvers including a 1917-S Mercury, and a 50% Canadian. Only 16 nickels so far but that is not bad considering they were only silver for four years.

Only 4 halves, I'll admit I have not done a ton of halves but I'm also in a black-hole for them, my bank just re-rolls what they have on hand so getting silver's from them is a really big find. If I could order a few thousand at a time they would order them special from the fed but I'm not rich enough for that.

I only get Halves from banks, but I do get to check boxes of dimes and quarters weekly through work, with that being said I have found the most in the dimes boxes. But quarters can be hit or miss, I went almost 8 months with nothing then bam!! Quarter after quarter for 3 months straight (I think it helped that it was over the holiday season)And I constantly pull out copper pennies. Hope this helps a little.
