I have just left it for now there but is there anyway to clean off tape residue from a old 1922 weak d Lincoln Wheat penny.

Should I just leave it?

I am sure you know as a general rule never clean a coin. Most would say to remove tape use pure acetone but I am wondering if the tape gets removed will it be a lighter tone under it? Wait for a pro to chime in.

Certainly a possibility BUT acetone (and maybe xylene) is the only thing that I know of that will remove the tape without affecting a coin's surfaces.
If the tape has protected the surface under it from toning you either:
-- have to live with it, or
-- use something that will remove the tape AND affect the rest of the coin's surfaces.

You're sort of "caught between a rock and a hard place".

I'd consider this coin a good candidate for removing the tape residue with acetone. It looks like the color is consistent, indicating the patina was complete before the tape was applied. With the residue in place, it's a Details coin. If the residue exposes a strip of lighter color, it's still a Details coin. It's a wash. And if the color is consistent under the tape, he now has a coin which probably justifies the cost of slabbing (that's around VF20 for a "Weak D," depending on initial investment).

OcalaFlorida, do a Search around the forum for the safe and proper use of acetone. We discuss it frequently, and there's a lot of good information available.

Acetone will pull that residue, and it doesn't really matter how old it is. The only question is whether or not it would be a net improvement, and I think the math is favorable in this case.

Always follow the polarity ladder when attempting to remove any type of surface residue:

1) distilled or deionized water
2) acetone (do not use fingernail polish remover)
3) xylene
