Coin collectors and enthusiasts from across Canada and the U.S. will be in Niagara Falls this weekend for the 54th annual Canadian Numismatic Association convention.

"Coins are part of our history in Canada. They are a part of who we are," said Peter Kostyk, a coin collector and vice-chairman of the convention.

Kostyk said the convention is the largest of its kind in Canada and more than 70 dealers will be there with displays of coins, paper money, Canadian Tire money, jewelry and other collectibles.

The convention is open to the public this weekend from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m at the Sheraton Fallsview Hotel and Convention Centre on Fallsview Boulevard.

Admission is $5 for adults and free to children younger than 16. Parking is available for free on the west side of Stanley Avenue.

Visitors will be able to buy, sell or get coins appraised.

There are also programs for kids, including a design-your-own-coin contest for children younger than 16, as well as draws and free gifts.

"Education is our main aim, especially for the kids because they are the next group to take over for us," said Kostyk.

There is also an auction for the big kids offering the chance to own coins and paper money from a multi-million dollar collection by C & P Numismatics of Quebec.

Visitors can view the auction pieces today from 9 a.m. to noon.

The Canadian Mint and the British Mint will also have displays set up at the event with items for guests to purchase.

"There will be a treasure chest of rare coins from all over the world. Definitely something for everyone and well worth the money," said Kostyk.
