Was looking through some pennies and noticed two 1971's with slightly different size and placement of the "D" mint mark... The 9's seem different as well... Is this of any signifigance?

I had just ask a similar question about a 1973-s and the answer I got was USA coin mintmarks are applied by a craftsman with an hand punch after the fact prior to 1980 so as you can imagine the mint mark location would vary greatly.

When they are punched into the die, varying strengths can happen. Sometimes in the same year different styles of mint mark punches maybe used. The classic case is the 1946 year.

So being hand done can account for different depths of punchings.

And when the die gets worn it has to be re-punched.

Actually Al, at one time I thought that. But they are punched that way before the first coin is struck. The punch must have been overlooked at the time. They start out that way. How they missed it in 1956 I do not know. But they happen because the die is punch several times to get the depth and definition they wish. It is a miss location of a previous punch.
