I bought a medallion at a thrift store in a blue presentation case

The box says "Monnaie De Paris" which would be the French Mint

The front of the medallion says Republique Francaise Hotel de Castries and has an engraving of the hotel

The reverse of the medallion says Michel Mercier Ministre de l'espace rural et de l'amenagement du terriroire"

There is a small hallmark on the edge but I cannot even make it out with my loop

Anyone ever seen or heard of this medallion? I even went to the French ebay site and could not find one like it

What kind of metal is it made of?

Yes I live in the states; that is why I was surprised to find something like this.

I suspect that the small mark that you cannot decipher is the Monnaie's cornucopia mark or Corne d'abondance which they have used since the 60s I believe.

I've found one on ebay:

The Hotel de Castries is actually a historic building in Paris, used by the French government. In Classical French the word "Hotel" was used to signify any large house or secular building - a town hall in France is still called a "Hotel de Ville". As time went on, the word gradually started to apply to large inns and hostelries!

Thanks for the info.

What kind of metal do you think it is made of? I read that they have made medals out of a bronze with a silver finish. I guess it could be pewter. Not sure if I am lucky enough for it to be silver.

Any idea how much it would be worth?
