Always a good show to attend if you're in the area. I haven't missed one in about 5 years now.

This show will be my first as a dealer with a table. I'll be wearing a light blue colored shirt on both days. My name is Matthew and my badge will have "Mattscoin" on it. I hope some of you are able to stop by and say hi!

So are the Ontario/Quebec shows larger than this one? I know all the big Canadian dealers show up (even the Maritime guys... that's a long flight!) to the Edmonton show.

Come on now Matt, I'm sure you had a table 10 years ago and I sold you an 1884 Obverse 1 large cent.

I think that was Mattz Coinz, a (then) young kid from Red Deer, who always wore a tie. I bought a bunch of 1c and 5c BU rolls from him in 2006. Didn't he end up at NorthGate Coin & Stamp in Edmonton, inheriting the shop when the owner won the lottery?

Not the same "dude". There is another man by the name of Matt who runs Northgate Coin and Stamp here in Edmonton. I do not know if he was from Red Deer or if he ever went by "Mattzcoins". Until SPP's post, I had never heard of that name. I've been collecting for over a decade, but didn't start even attending shows as a collector until maybe 2006. And I avoid wearing a tie at all costs :)

Yes, that is the same Matt (Matthew Sztym). He used to go to the Edmonton shows as Mattz Coinz. Matt originally had grand ambitions of politics (Conservative Party supporter), but then I think he acquired a sour taste for the reality of politics.... I don't know if he finished his degree. He then worked for Northgate Coin & Stamp. When the owner of that store won the lottery, Matt got the store. He joined the Edmonton Coin Club in 2007, and got more involved after I left in 2008...

He originally was partnered up with Ron Thompson (Rons Coins of St. Albert) and then had his own table at age 15 at the Edmonton show as Mattz Coinz. Later, (2007-ish) he changed his name to Rocky Mountain Coin & Antiques. He used to drag this giant antique cash register to coin shows, and use it for the sales at his table....

He was also featured in the Edmonton Journal in 2008...

So there ya go - don't be surprised if some collectors come up to you and ask if you are the same "Matt"...

Ah yes, now that I see his name in writing, the Mattz Coinz with the z's makes sense. I do occasionally get mistaken for him online. In person we look nothing alike, other than being young for being serious into coins.

I'm thinking of wearing some kind of distinctive outfit and posting a picture of it here so you can all say hi... but I'm not sure if this is a good idea or not. For the previous two shows, I have always only come on Sunday as there is invariably some kind of debate tournament going on for me on Saturday... but this weekend, my partner can't debate, so neither can I! This leaves my schedule wondrously free, so I hope to see a wonderland of fresh coins that haven't been picked over yet.

I have a question, though. I recently joined the ENS just so I could get free admission to these shows (I am under 16 but I guess I'm too tall for it to be believable and last fall I had to pay), but I have no proof of membership (like a little card or something). Is there a list of members' names that they'll pick me off of? How can they tell?

No problem, Zonad. See you at the show :)

nalaberong, I believe all persons under the age of 16 do not have to pay the admission fee. Although there may be some catch such as being accompanied by an adult? I am not entirely sure.

Yes, last time they let me pick through the free foreign coin bin for the kids, but they did not even mention free admission for under-16s. Because I was not too sure myself I went along with it and paid the $5... however, if anything comes up at this show I will bring my school ID with my date of birth on it.
