I don't have much luck lately with rolls to search? The last 5 rolls of nickels I got were full of 80s and 90s. Where do you get your rolls? I sometimes think the armored car people cherry pick the coins before they roll them up.
I have had much better luck with just asking for a dollars worth out of the drawer. Some nice old stuff has come my way using that method.

The bank is the best place to get rolls. Sometimes you might get mostly new coins but if you try again and again your bound to find some nice things.

At the bank and in bulk, ask for a box of nickels set down a $100 bill then see how black your fingers get they are dirty.

Also you may have to go to a certain branch to get them in bulk, just call and ask where to go for boxes of coins.

$25 for pennies, nice copper and some old Wheaties.

$100 for nickels, some silver and chance for buffalo and V-nickels

$250 for dimes, seems to have the best return for silver, most days.

$500 each for boxes of quarters and halves, quarters are great for the State and ATB sets but not good on silver. Halves are a little better for silver finds but they have been hunted for years and are getting scarce.

Edit: A little long winded and you just asked about nickel and cent but those can get boring fast

I pick them up at the bank. Sometimes, I go with full boxes, other times I pickup $10 of a denomination. This sometimes gives me a different mix sources of coins. Both can be winners or losers, just got to keep at it to increase your odds.
Rest in Peace

My specific bank and tellers know I'm into cents but, I also tell them to give me a older looking Fed. wrap. ($25.00 box) Being in a small community I have been skunked buying bank wrapped cents because the coins were sorted all obverse or all reverse. Leading me believe there is " another coin roll hunter in my neck of banks"
Wish I could run into this nasty person.

By the box is the best option, as others have said. The bank I got 3 silver halves from today, the teller told me they have collectors that work AT the bank, so they probably don't have anything good, and yet I still got 3 silver halves in the 4 rolls they had.

A box is taped or glued up, and if you ask for one and they try to give you an open one, just tell them you won't take an open one that could be short.

Only last week was I denied a box of pennies from a bank, because they ran out due to weather preventing a delivery. If you want to have cleaner hand, and not too worried about the coins, the drug stores have boxes of 50 thin rubber gloves you can use to look the coins and just toss the dirt away, or maybe even wash them while wearing them (then gloves, not the coins, as the coins seem to slip out of gloved hands in a sink and then you have to take it apart to find that silver coin in the trap).

Once a week, I go to my local bank and ask for either 2 boxes of pennies or one box of nickels (depends on my mood). I've found that Brinks boxes, versus Loomis, yield more finds.

The more you search, the better the odds of finding something amazing and valuable.

It would take me forever to go through $100.00 worth of nickels, plus being beyond my budget. I will buy a coin from my local shop that I am missing on occasion, but my searching is for a better coin to upgrade my Jefferson collection of all years and mint marks.
I have found that I get a better variety of grades and dates by asking for a dollar or two worth worth of nickels from the active cash drawer when I pay for something.
I will try the bank for some rolls though.

Definitely get a box... They are very quick when you get a system of searching/rolling/dumping down. I frequently go through 8-10 boxes a week.

Try to get a little of everything. That way if you bust on one denomination, you still have a chance at finding something. For example, recently I got the following...

$5 in cents
$20 in Nickels
$100 in dimes
$20 in quarters.

I busted on the quarters (I normally do) and the Dimes, but I scored a War Nickel and a few wheats in the other rolls.
