Just picked this up on ebay from a guy selling off his collection. He thinks it may be a 17th century Vatican token but I don't think so some how. He says it's silver. It only cost me $10 so I'm hoping I may of been lucky enough to get a little bargain here. Any helpers on this one? All suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

It's not "Catholic" - it's in the style of a Byzantine coin (Eastern Orthodox), so I doubt it's a Vatican souvenir. Going by the IW+DE in the legend, I'm guessing it's supposed to be in the name of an Emperor John - either John I (969-976) or John II (1118-1143), I can't tell - except the legends are far too neat and readable for a genuine Byzantine coin of the period. There were three later Johns, but their coins should look even worse.

The obverse of your coin shows Christ enthroned (much like he appears on coins of John II) with the title REX REGNANTUM (which only appears on coins of John I). The reverse shows the emperor being crowned by the Virgin Mary, with titles similar to those that appear on John II coins.

Here are some examples of genuine Byzantine coins of John I and John II on Wildwinds.
