I just ran out of 2x2 coin flips and am now looking to buy some more. I found some on ebay (see link below). They're vinyl flips but on the packaging it says "NO PVC". I am wondering if these would be safe for long term storage? I know that vinyl flips are considered unsafe but if they really don't contain any PVC they should be safe? Also, if anyone has used them I am wondering how they feel. Are they fairly rigid or do they feel soft like cheap vinyl flips? Any feedback is appreciated!

Quoting the seller "Note: Some sellers on ebay are indicating that Vinyl Coin Flips are for archival use and that they are coin safe. They may not. Vinyl is short for Polyvinyl Chlorine (PVC).
Vinyl Flips are not intended for long-term storage of coins. They are intended for short-term uses such as shipping or for coin shows. The flips provide easy identification and convenience. Generally, coins should not remain in the flips for more than 6 months. Coins should be placed in cardboard holders or similar holders with polypropylene (Mylar) film for safe long-term storage.
PVC generally does not react with coins that are in mint condition or uncirculated coins. Coins that have developed a patina over time should be placed in polypropylene or polystyrene for long term storage. Chemically treated coins that may have residual chemicals on their surface are the coins that at the greatest risk of further degradation in a PVC Holder."

So basically don't buy them. Look for Saflips, they're a bit expensive but are worth the cost.

I have never liked the vinyl flips, even the ones deemed to be "safe". I have ruined a couple nice Barber quarters, even after only a couple months being stored in them. I have also been to a couple shops where they were being used extensively, and you could see the green "film" growing on them.

I kind of figured that. I guess I will get some Saflips or other non-vinyl flips. I don't want to save a couple $ only to damage coins worth much more.

Well, there is also Polyvinyl Acetate (PVAc) and Polyvinyl Fluoride (PVF).

Personally, PVC or not, I only use these clear flips for temporary storage. The PVC version can ruin a coin and non-PVC versions tend to crack or deteriorate.

For long term, coins either go into a normal Dansco hole or a cardboard 2x2 holder.

On this note, I just removed this last couple of weeks ebay purchases from the holders they shipped in, a myriad of things, from 2x2 mylars stapled, to PVC and Archivals flips, along with some poly bags and paper envelopes. Each coin was treated with acetone, and some were lightly wiped with q-tips (these are all circulated) almost ever coin I won - ended up with a bit of green slime on the q-tip ends after I was done with them, they've all been transferred to my preferred method of storage, for my circulated Two Cent Pieces - 2x2 mylar flips, stapled with a flat cinch stapler. No over the next few days I need to verify attributions on them. I buy an average of 2-3 of them each day, amazing how many come with PVC on them still, I'd say 90% have some small bit of PVC slime on them, ones in the soft vinyl flips that have obviously been in them quite awhile even have build up of green juicy gunk in the denticles and around the leaves and letters, Got to get that stuff of fast!

BCW flips = NOT SAFE FOR LONG TERM STORAGE!
