I'm fairly new to CRH'ing (about 1 month) and I've been learning the ropes and trying to figure out the best way to replenish my rolls and boxes for my CRH fix.
At first, I really didn't have a strategy for which banks to hit up. It was, for lack of a better phrase, a crap shoot. My city has TONS of banks so I decided to just randomly drop in and start asking for rolls of coins. Most tellers would give me a strange look at first and then go ahead and fulfill the request and I would be on my way. However, I had a couple banks straight out tell me "no" when I asked. I'm the type of guy to not make a fuss over something so small, so I just turned around and walked out. I also had this happen at the bank I use for my checking and savings accounts. I got a little bent out of shape about this one because I am a customer of theirs and the teller I spoke to was probably 19 and acted as if I was a huge burden to him for even asking. Still, I didn't make a stink about it and just left.
It's not really a huge deal now since I believe I have found a bank to make my box pickups and the tellers are extremely nice. I just wanted to know what others have experience and what you did when you were denied.

I have never been denied rolls yet. It helps to go to a bank that you have an account with because I have found they are more willing to give you rolls and order boxes for you.

Unfortunately, the bank I use for checking and savings has been my worst experience.

I have had that happen, but I went back and used NLP and it never happens anymore to quick fix this to start out with smile and make eye contact, say hello by there name on the tag, ask to withdraw a certain amount ask them how they doing. tell them about your kids, or something interesting you got a fundraiser for your cub scout troop, etc. In conversation get them to say yes, something simple like its a nice day, crowded, etc anything to get them to say yes, once you do after they are smiling tell them you JUST need it in coins and say the amounts and quickly say Thank You so much after. If they get ready to say something, interrupt them politely, then tell them you know need to get you business account set up but the accountants and lawyers didn't set up yet so you cant open the account yet then tell them you cant wait everything thing fixed. and thank them again
Smile, Eye Contact, what you need, why you need it penny fundraiser, change for church event, boyscouts, girl scouts, etc, they in the yes mode its going to be hard for them to say no.

I'm always polite when I go into these places. The last thing I want to do is be a burden to these people and ruin their day. I always try to be courteous and friendly as that is what I would expect from them. Most places comply without any questions. Some may ask me what I need them for and I typically tell them I'm collecting coins with my kids (which is true). It's only the two or three I've been to that don't even bother to ask why or anything. Just "no". I approach each counter the same way. That being said, I don't think it's my attitude going into these places. Just different personalities behind the counter.

Make sure you are using the correct Branch of your bank. I have to go across town to pick up boxes but a few rolls from most branches is OK. Also walking into a bank you don't have an account with and asking for anything is a good way to get a visit from big men in black suits and big SUV's with ear pieces Quote: Unfortunately, the bank I use for checking and savings has been my worst experience That is an issue... call around to different banks in your area and ask them which branch you would have to go to in order to get boxes, find one with a 'Change Hub' near your home or work. Ask them about setting up a savings account with them (might end up with a better interest rate too). Then go into your checking/savings bank and empty your savings account. Close it out completely, explain that you are unhappy with the service you have received and are also considering removing your checking account but will wait until all your checks are gone before you close that account. And make sure to ask to speak to an account rep and not just the tellers when you close it out. When your checks do run out drop the account balance to $0.10 and continue to use them for change pick up's and coin drops. A few minutes for a lazy 19 year old going to the vault Verses loosing all the revenue your savings account gives them... Eye contact, happy, joking attitude at all times, and try not to hit them during the rush hours. edit: spelling

Why LIE!?!
saying it's for xyz company, or the scouts? Why?
"Hello I'm a coin roll hunter and I want to see if I can find any silver in your coins... "You don't like that practice? "Well if you don't like coin roll hunters then I'll be withdrawing everything from my account in large bills, and closing my accounts but you be sure to have a nice day."
Short simple and the TRUTH! aside from anything else when you get there and ask for the pick up for xyz company, what if they want you to produce a paystub or letterhead to confirm that you are associated with xyz company?

They never ever ask. I've been getting legit business and personal change orders 3 to 4 times a week for ten years.

I say "I pull out all the foreign coins and crap in the rolls" - and it's true! Talk about it like you are doing them a service if they do you a service.

Quote: That's disgusting. :I It's what I DO, though - I have long stopped expecting or finding silver, and old coins are being melted down before they get to my boxes. I'm mostly trying to complete my collection of State Quarters and pick out any foreign that comes along (they are rare but so far I have found coins of the PRC, UAE, Belize and Luxembourg). So I'm not lying about any of this...

Yes. I smile and never go back. Sometimes I'll get a no, we only have enough right now for business clients, which is fine. I check back in a few days normally. nalaberong, he is joking. look at what you said literally....makes it sound a little like you are doing something nasty in the rolls after checking them. it took me a second to get it too.

yeah I misread that the first time too... I never did answer the original question, but yes I have been denied then I ask for a different denomination and they usually can handle that, or I'll get a few rolls instead of a box. Diversify, shake things up. and if you are not telling them you are doing CRH then you can't tell them about the 1917-S Mercury or the Key Date 1955-S Roosevelt that they had handed you the day before... Never give up nalaberong they are still out there, try a different bank maybe, and most do require you have an account so just open another savings account

I have had that happen multiple times. Sometimes when I get boxes and search through them, when I take them back they denied them because the rolls are uneven even though I did replace any (old) coin I took out. Other people roll them and don't even do it right and it costs me money because then when I get those rolls I need to put what ever amount of coins arnt in the rolls into the rolls. Another time I went and got 2 boxes of nickels at a bank and there each $100 bucks each, the (young) lady said that they were $200 each so I let her get the box and when she took the box out and I was leaving I asked another employee for another box, I would of been ripped off $100. At another bank I normally just explained exactly what I was doing and they just didn't get it, it was like they had just started and I left with nothing even though I knew they had boxes in the back. I've gotten REALLY frustrated with things like that but it just depends on the teller and there amount of experience. Good Luck!
