The problem is that I want to save them as 'unopened and unsearched,' and if I open them to check them then the whole purpose is defeated. APMEX claims they are unsearched original BWRs. Can I trust them and their sources? I'm assuming that they don't get all the rolls from banks, and probably get them from private sources too. I mean, what do they do......weigh the rolls? How do they know they aren't getting ripped off when they buy them? They can't check every roll....or can they? Any thoughts? I'll probably call them and ask them. Of course you can. I've made dozens upon dozens of purchases from APMEX, never had a problem along with fast delivery. I've ordered lots of junk, unsearched silver, too, all of which were worth more than what I payed. APMEX has a 98% customer satisfaction rate, as far as I know. Sure, go for it!

I'd check the reviews for the product, too. If they're low, then I would move on. If you're buying from a dealer at a coin show? Don't touch it with a 10 1/2 foot pole. I've never had much success with unsearched and unopened rolls from dealers.

I recently purchased some rolls from APMEX. They were supposed to be OBW rolls. APMEX describes them as, "BU 90% Silver in the original unopened unsearched bank wrappers." Frankly, they didn't look original to me. They look to be generic white and green wrappers, and not too old. Some had a little bit of brown toning on the white paper. I'll post a photo of some of them when I get home. Will also call APMEX tomorrow, they are already closed for the night. edit: here are some photos of what APMEX is selling as what I described above. The end coins are a little toned, and the rolls are as tight as a drum, some of the paper is aged a little brown, not on this one though.

I had a conversation with APMEX this am, and although they weren't about to reveal any trade secrets, they assured me that what they sell as 'Original Unsearched Bank Wrapped 90% Silver Rolls' are genuine. I suggested that the rolls I recently bought looked a little newer than 50 years old, they again assured me they weren't. They also said something I thought was a bit odd, "that only banks have the ability to make "bank" rolls." Not exactly sure what they meant by that statement, but it seems to me the roll making technology is not that sophisticated, and that almost anybody would have the ability to obtain the equipment to make a tight bank roll. I didn't ask any more questions because it seemed that their patience was wearing a bit thin.

You can buy industrial-quality coin-wrapping machines for $5,000 or so, edweather. You may want to call them back and point that out.

I sent APMEX an email this afternoon asking them about the wrappers, and this is what they said. "Thank you for your inquiry. I spoke with the product manager and he said the rolls are so white because they were stored in the original box from the bank all this time. The company that makes this style of paper to roll in the coins in was only used in the 1960's......" I have to assume they have no reason to lie, and will accept their response unless I can offer some sort of evidence to the contrary.

Over the past couple of weeks I had a couple of phone conversations and exchanged a couple of emails w/APMEX re: these 8 rolls. I was going to keep them, but became more and more uncomfortable with them. They just look way too new. Just got off the phone with them, and they said they would be willing to accept a return even though it was past their usual return date. They were gracious about it and I'm really happy I don't have to live with these 8 rolls.

I have bought from APMEX before. I don't buy the story about them being stored and that's why they ain't discolored. Some win and some lose. Hey at least you ain't buying supposed unsearched Wheat penny rolls on ebay. lol I learned that lesson early on. my favorite is the ads for Mercury dime on one end Indian head on the other. Well how in heck do you know whats in it then? haha as for APMEX you are the one with it in your hand. only you can decide I suppose. I don't personally buy rolls anymore. just old fashioned get em from the bank, take em back after cherry picking.

I also let them know that they should edit their website to show a photo of an "original" roll along with a plain wrapper, and mention that the buyer might get either. They currently only show a photo of an original old looking roll and the buyer thinks that's what they're getting. I ordered 10, and 2 were the real deal. I'm really happy they accepted the return even though it was past their usual return date. Won't be ordering any more of these from them, that's for sure.
