Seems that The Royal Mint will issue four commemorative coins in 2009: one £5 piece, two £2 coins and a 50p coin ...

* 500th anniversary of the accession of Henry VIII
* 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin and the 150th anniversary of publication of The Origin of the Species
* 250th anniversary of the birth of Robert Burns

I'd be very interested in the Henry VIII commemorative. Tudor England history is a passion of mine.

G'day Chrisild, and thankyou:
I live in a city named after DARWIN. Our University recently changed its name to "Charles Darwin University", in case the connection was too subtle.
I don't collect modern UK coins, but I'll have to pick up a 2009 GBP-2.

All four issues are interesting, theme wise, in my opinion. None of the coins commemorates anything "abstract" - such themes are often difficult to visualize. (For example, I find this year's Slave Trade Abolition coin to be quite disappointing.) Plus, they can all be had at face value. Good.

I'm going to buy a bunch of Proof Darwin coins and auction them off on ebay. I'll then use the money to buy Intellegent Design textbooks and donate them to the local high school.

One of my friends gave me a Bible and some anti-evolution books, of which I have no use. Maybe we can make a deal to swap.

Let's just hope Scientology doesn't come out with a coin. If they did.

It would show up slabbed with a black covering.
If you wanted to see the front you'd have to pay.
If you wanted to see the back you'd have to pay more.
If you took it out of the holder to see the rim you'd be sued for violating their intellectual property.
