Went out today to pick up a few sets for my books. Picked up a 79 proof set for 10$ not even thinking about types I and II. Got home and started looking at it and I am 85% sure its a type II set! Including the SBA. I dont have anything to magnify the mint marks for pictures bit none ofbthe Ss were blobs. I could make out the S pretty clearly on all of the coins. Is there any other way of identifying these types besides the mint mark?

Chances are good that you have a winner. The mint mark is the only way I'm aware of. nlp

The type specifically refers to the mintmark, there are no other differences. It should be obvious on a 1979 but the 1981 types have more subtle differences. It is also worth noting that the 1979-S TII is the same mintmark as the 1981-S TI.

Not really the best way on the 1979 is the BLOB is Type 1 and Clear is Type 2. Your set is a real winner. The most common combination for Type 2 coins in a 1979 set is for all of the coins to be Type 2 except for the SBA which just happens to be the one of the six that's worth the most money.
