So I've picked up few graded Walking Liberty coins an dive been using numismedia.com as my price guide. Would you guys recommend this? I don't pay over what they suggest. I picked up a NGC 1944 MS 65 for $85.00 which I was thinking was a good deal. Am I going about this a decent way or am I doing it totally wrong. I've picked up four other graded coins but don't wont to list them just in case I way over paid by using this method.

If you can get them for that much less than Numismedia Retail, by all means. It's my opinion that Numismedia is a bit high for real-world pricing; $85 is a good number for that coin but their suggestion of $125 is way over the top.

I agree, seems like they are a little bit higher than what I would go usually. My first instinct is to check completed listings on ebay and see what they went for on there. Gives a much better idea of what the current market is in my mind.

Thanks for the advice. So far I've been at least 10% below numismedia on all coin purchases. I'm not trying to flip these coins I just want make sure I'm not getting taken to the cleaners on my coins.

From your oringinal statement. Had me fooled for a while.
As most people will tell you any and all price guides are just that, GUIDES. There is no real price on a coin except what is written on it. So your Half Dollar is really only a Half Dollar. However, just as with cars, what youi are willing to pay is what it is worth. Rather that using such Guides, just look at what they are selling for on ebay.

You made a good deal. I recently completed the short set in MS65. I designed a spreadsheet to get data as I went along to compare prices. These are all current (as of last Monday) numbers for comparisons on the 1944.

Price Lists: Coin World $140; NGC $125; PCGS $150; Numismedie $125; Average $135
Current Dealer Listings: Low $135; High $180 (?); Average $162
Auctions (Last 20 COMPLETED transaction:
Heritage Low $88, High $141, Average $101
Great Collections: Low $82, High $155, Average $105
E-Bay: Low $82, High $126, Average $95

Hope this helps your confidence!

Surprised nobody mentioned it but not all coins graded MS65 are the same. That is why some sell for $80 and some for $150. It also depends if the coin is PCGS or NGC (or something else). For some graded Walkers I have paid more then guide prices. There are some beautiful MS65's out there and some that look more like MS63's. In the end pay what you want, because there will always be someone that says you over paid.

They had lots of difficultly striking these. This is extremely evident on branch mint issues from the teens and twenties. So a weak strike is worth a lot less than one with a really good strike.

Both tpg22 and CoinCollector2012 are right on about the strike quality. I just listed the prices above but if you look at the pictures of the offered coins you will notice the differences. Like mentioned above, branch mint issues were a problem. Although not the hardest to find in MS65, to my surprise I had quite a search for a well struck 1942-D. It is one that I gladly paid a premium on. Like tpg22 said, some may say I overpaid for it but in then end, I believe I paid a fair price for the quality I got.

I think the price of these is always going to be going up so I never look at it as over paying, I look at it as paying a "future" price. :)

It would be nice for the "future" price to go back to the short set price of 1986. Currently, the short set runs somewhere in the $4000 range depending of strike, etc. In 1986 the same set cost about $17,500 It also reached around $8000 for a brief period in 2004.

This is why I love this forum such a vast amount of knowledge and advice. No matter how long you've been doing this you'll come across stuff you didn't know. As far as walkers great coins if you want a 3 to five year investment don't over look the lower grade 16's 17's and 19's all 3 mints. mintages from 508,000 to 1.5 million. In g to VG you can find them from $25 to $75 great upside in my opinion.
