This particular replica widows mite is very commonly encountered; we see about four a year posted here on the forum by people as puzzled about them as you are. They are still being mass-produced today and sold via religious supplies stores; the store I linked to in this old thread is still selling them for $1.50 each; other stores sell them in bulk so a church pastor can buy one for everyone in the congregation.
If you scroll down, I see they also sell other, higher-quality replicas in packs of two for $5. They'll even sell you THE REAL THING! for $8.50.
