I like the Italian 50 Lire in gold from 1911, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Kingdom of Italy, and then the Danish West Indies 4 Daler from 1905 with Mermaid on the reverse. Of course they way out of what I will spend on a coin though :(

But Portugal contemporaneously believed that simpler is better.

ScottishMoney I too like the Italian 1922 coin you have posted but have been unable to find one in such high quality. And, Becky, that Crown you refer to eludes most of us so I too had to get the little sister but will NEVER quit watching for a Gothic Crown to show up in an unexpected place (Hopefully) such as an estate sale. Wouldn't that be a dream come true?

Sorry, I might be part of the problem why you cannot find the Italian coins, because I am hoarding up all the nice ones. Same with the Portuguese 4 Centavos, I have quite a few of them now.

Scottishmoney: I also have seen many of the Italy 1922 20 centisimi, but never one that nice. Ditto the Portugal 4 centavos. Since you have so many, why not put one or two up for auction, sale or trade? Do you have a picture of the Italy gold 50 lire. I couldn't find one.

Well most of my Portuguese 4 Centavos all came from the same mint state lot that I bought from a seller in Portugal, what I noticed when I got them is that they have varying degrees of die degradation from not much to a well seen crack above the girl's head. So the coins had been together for over 80 years now, were from the same lot but struck on the same day probably as the die deteriorated and probably shattered later. Sometime I want to do a feature on them. I am collecting the 20 Centimos from Italy by date, which is why I have a lot of those. These are popular coins and can be found on ebay for not much. The 4 Centavos coins I got for a pittance. Portuguese coins are the great undiscovered coins of Europe. BTW I am still on probation here so cannot buy or sell anything

Scottishmoney, I have your Italy 1922 but it is 1991... well at least I think it is. Looking at it again it looks 1921. It is not gold looking as your's is showing. Got it from Tiff. Here's one I found and like very much and will be added to my collection very soon. mila_

Really like that Polish "maiden" design. It's a classic beauty. Mine is an AU 1935 10 zlotych. The pic isn't great because it's in a slab.

The first one I got from a fellow collector, the others I bought at a coin show (actually Open Mint Day) in Utrecht, NL this year. These 2 zl coins are not expensive and yet nicely designed - well, many of them are. Problem is, they issue way too many of them, about ten per year if you add all "themes". Of this year's pieces I also got the Krakow and Enigma coins. The "History of the Polish Zloty" series is depicted and described here: http://www.nbp.pl/Below the eagle, click on English. Then use the pop-up menus: Banknotes and coins -> Collector Coins and 2 zl NG -> Images of Collector Coins and 2 zl NG -> choose a year. What is a little strange about those commemorative 2 zl coins is that on one hand they can be obtained at face value AFAIK but on the other hand their specifications are quite different from the regular 2 zl pieces. The latter are smaller and bimetallic. So I don't think you see the commemorative pieces "in the wild" a lot ... "PS" - The link above is the central bank's website; the mint also has a list of collector coins: http://www.mennica.com.pl/index.php...r_coins.htmlChristian
